Will a Hydraulic pump pump water ?

Warning - thread Hijack in progress.

Hey Brett,

I would get the specifics of that claim in writing.

I was told something similar by the Holmatro dealer years and years ago but his take was that the pickup tube on the Power Units did not go all the way to the bottom of the reservoir (and Holmatro runs on Mineral Oil) so in a pinch we could add water to the PU and float the Mineral Oil up to the pick-up tube. I don't think he was ever advocating actually letting water enter the system.

(Side Note - Hurst uses Phosphate Ester based fluid, not sure what TNT runs but I will be soon after we get some of the new battery hydraulic ones)

While I would never spare any piece of equipment over a persons life & I agree that when life safety is on the line the philosophy of "It will work till it don't" is acceptable risk - you need to be aware of who's going to be on the hook for the destruction of several thousand dollars of extrication equipment.

One of the first things you're taught is "Always have a Plan B", the next thing is "When Plan B becomes Plan A, think up a new Plan B".
I wouldn't take that trick out of my toolbox but I would move it very very far down the list and I would be very sure I understood all the ramifications of that action.

Like I tell the cadets in our academy - I'm not fussin, I'm not preachin, we're just talkin and you have to decide for yourself.
Be safe Brother.

No doubt. In a pinch, you can cut a vehicle apart with a battery powered or AC powered reciprocating saw. Been there done that; we even took a K-12 saw to a car once in training (it caught fire lol).

I've seen multiple videos of a car being cut in half with an axe.

Sawzalls are definitely a possibility. Sometimes they are faster than the tools, if anything they are another tool in the tool box. As these cars are becoming safer, it's making it harder on us due to the improvements in material and their strength.

I'll have my guys get the k12 to cut a V by the hood latch to get it up if it's giving us fits

No thank you. Cutting a vent hole with a saw is enough.

I always wondered just the opposite, namely, whether a pressure washer could be converted into a gas-powered hydraulic pump...
It sure can, we use triplex pumps on closing units pumping oil or glycol all the time. they are more dirt tolerant along with different fluids. But you have to keep oil in them and they do not last as long AND they are about 3 times as much cost. Most 10k pumps are radial piston pumps or triplex design, like was stated the radials will pump water just not for long. If it was to save somebodys life? Who cares about a pump, DO IT. CJ
