I bought a 3.5 Kw generator from Princess Auto going on to three decades ago I've yet to use it and I haven't even put gas in it. 8 hp B&S engine on it. It was dirt cheap at the time (slight damage to the frame around it) but by the time I had heard about a generator losing it's ability to generate if left sitting too long, it was already too long! I knew it had to be reflashed but since I didn't have one of these it never got done!

Honda EU3000is. I have two of them. Very reliable and quiet. I used one to provide electric for AC in my camper on the farm all summer. Change the oil as per the schedule and they do very well.

You might consider a portable welder if you have need of one.

I keep a Lincoln 305 G in my garage for power outages. It does require pulling it out the door with the pallet jack, though.

Generac 4000EXL. Bought just before the great Y2K panic. Still starts easy and works good.

Shopping for a portable generator. Don't want to power whole house, just some basic necessities. I see where they make a dual fuel ( gas or propane ) generator. Since we have propane for heat there will always be a supply at the house. I was thinking the size range at between 5000 to 8000 would be sufficient. We have 24 acres so i will be using it also to go out on the property for projects.

Thanks

I just purchased a Harbor Freight Predator 8750/7000 13hp gas generator, for $529.00 with the wheel kit.

I have to say it appears to be a 9 out 10 in quality, fit and finish. It has a cast iron Honda clone engine.

First thing I did was install an hour meter,($12.00} replaced the OEM sparkplug with a NGK plug and added oil (Rotella 15w/30W). It started on the second pull. I've since bought the HF battery with a 25% coupon and no core charge. I purchased two extra plugs an air filters on ebay.

Very important, I ran it 3 hours at no load for proper break in. At 20 hours, I will change the oil to a full synthetic.

I plugged in a Killawatt meter($18) during break in and it showed very clean Watts, volts and kHz!

My initial impression is that it a great value, very quite as compared to previous units and provides clean power.

They really hit a home run with their Predator engine lineup.

i have the same generator, im curious as to why you think a no load break in is the right way to go?

also thats a pretty thick oil for a splash lube in the winter no? i use 5w-30

and according to HF the THD on this generator is <25% which is not considered clean although i did scope it and it looks very good

one thing i ran into though, was the governor spring can/will osculate when coming from a high load to an idle or vice vs. i ended up adding a piece of 1/2 pipe foam insulation over the spring to stop it from osculating. that made it much more stable for me

i hope u change the oil before 20 hours, alot of metal in it after only 1 hour of breakin, ( i do a varying load break in) so mine may have had more metal in it
