4' LED "shop" lights for ~ $32 at Costco

I too was disappointed with the Costco LED replacement tubes that use the ballast. They were bright enough (as long as I put the LED side down) but killed the ballast after a month. Replaced them with ones from Amazon that work on 120v direct, they work well (they have a second or two delay when you turn the light switch on that bothers some folks).

I've got a combo of the dual-tube 4' LED fixtures (4) and fairly late-model T8 regular fluorescents (12). The LEDs are vastly superior to the T8s. Instant on, no "warmup", no flicker, no radio interference. I wired 2 of the LEDs in as auxiliary lights for the garage door openers. I use them constantly as "walkway" lighting to navigate the dark basement. I cringe every time I have to use the whole set of 12 fluorescents. I think the lights upstairs may dim just a bit when they go on.

I try to take a pragmatic approach... the LED 4' florescent fixtures and bulbs swap from the ancient T12 is nothing sort of amazing.

The CREE and Phillips Edison Base LED are also very good.

With a daily average of 12 kWh I can still cut usage but am unwilling to toss out appliances that have served me well for decades... the 1960's Kenmore Washer/Dryer, Amana Refrigerator and Freezer or the 1980 Zenith Console...

After 42 years the old central 120,000 Btu furnace heat exchange cracked so I replaced it with a high efficiency unit and it has been flawless the last 15 years... dropping the summer natural gas bill to just hot water with a cost average of $9 a month.

I own the house next to Mom's so one of us could go all solar and always have a power available next door...

Thought about that for water... Mom uses 50 GPD water and her 60-Day water bill is $160.... seems running a water line from my home would save at least $1000 annually.

My dear friend that passed away a few weeks back after a short illness did his own 3-array solar install... even at age 82 the first thing he looked at every morning was how much power he generated the previous day... having his own solar gave him tremendous satisfaction and has not used a single PGE kW in years... was looking to buy a electric vehicle as he had so much extra in the kW bank.

One of my utility friends said the death spiral for electric utilities has begun... efficiency and alternative energy has impacted the bottom line.

Just imagine if everyone had LED for illumination?

Mom had 3 100W incandescent in some fixtures now replaced by 2 9W LED

Her reading lamp was 150W and on hours each day and now it is a 12W LED...

I have 4 of these LED shop lights from BJ's Wholesale in a 30 x 24 barn/garage and they are awesome. Amazing how bright it is in there! They work right off 120 and have an attached cord. I have a switched circuit with an outlet at each light, just plugged them in and that's it. Simple.

Double LED, no ballast 34watt

When i feel better, ill put the two LED replacement tubes in a ballast fixture and measure it.

Hmmm.... mine looked exactly the opposite. Next to the fluorescent, I could barely tell the LED was on. If my wife didn't already return the LED bulbs, maybe I will reinstall one and try it again and take a photo.

Again, no comparison to the Feit LEDs with fixtures that I love!

A pair of LED's at Costco are on sale for about a couple weeks more for $12.77, a $5 discount. Haven't installed any of them yet.

My bulb only replacements were definitely not living up to the challenge. Here is a comparison pic with a fluorescent vs LED in the original ballast.



Don't get me wrong... I absolutely love the LED twin bulbs in their own fixture. But my results plugging in the LED in a fluorescent fixture w/ballast is a failure.
