Too much going on in the 'cages' to ride much on the road, have an endorsement have for decades, but now dirt only and some dual sport in the mountains (dirt bike with a plate)
Ride single track and race MX and Vintage MX and building a track on the property.
In the shop now?
1973 Honda CR250
1981 Yamaha YZ465
1993 Honda CR250
1995 Honda CR500
2004 Honda CRF-250x (with a 270 kit)
2015 Husqvarna TE300

I recently thinned the herd.....dont ask.
I tell my wife just like firearms - when will you have enough bikes (firearms) my response is ALWAYS
"After the next one" and when the next one comes home I have the same answer...consistency is key!!:D

When my wife says I don't need anymore guns I reply with you don't need any more shoes.

I think the point with the metal grate bridges is that you really don't want to steer. Just hold on and stay upright. The bridge will do the steering for you if you just maintain balance. Tougher at very low speeds where there is little gyroscope effect and the natural tendency is to steer to maintain balance. Balancing with your butt works better on these metal gratings.

Over the Hudson River, towards Albany, is a steel decked bridge, with very large vertical supports spaced pretty evenly. I was riding across it in the rain, with a 50mph wind coming off the river, the rain was actually going up. The worst part, due to the wind, you were leaned way over to keep straight, every time you went past a support the wind blast dropped considerably, almost making you fall over. I may be mistaken about the location, it was a long time ago.

I bet that Husky is a blast to ride!?!?!
I have a KTM 250XCW now, it's in '08 and I'm ready to upgrade. I've been thinking hard about the new Husky/KTM 250 fuel injected 2 strokes. I'm gonna have a hard time holding back on buying a 'first year production run' of brand new technology. I think a fuel injected 2 stroke would make the perfect 24 hour race bike. Nice and light, but smooth and fuel efficient, and I wouldn't have to stop 3 times throughout the race to change my oil like a 4 stroke! :licking:

I've read so much about the Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, etc. I just wonder if there is anything like that out West here. It would be a looooong ride for me to just get there.

I have a lot of respect for steel grate bridges - especially those that are only one lane. Gone over my share on my old Harley(now my son's bike) and now again on my BMW. To say you should "hang loose" is easy - to keep from becoming "tight as a drum head" is not.

JRobyn - remember the good times. I gave my Harley to my son in 2014, thinking I was too old to ride. Come the gentile winds of spring - 2015 - and I'm back riding. This summer I traded up to my 2017 BMW R1200GSA. My new motto - "as long as I can still breathe".

Highway 190 east out of Springerville, CA will put a smile on your face, as will nearby M-90 and M-50 down to Kernville and the Sherman Pass road.

Note that detail specs don't jibe exactly with item page headers, tho' IME The higher figures (ah, CA) seem realistic in practice. This size fits most EVO FXs with horseshoe oil tanks & late AMFs with side-mounts.

I didn't get to go on those when I was out there recently (in a fun car not a bike) due to the fire.

But I did drive 245 up to Kings Canyon and would recommend it as a fun motorcycle road. Also: 36 from Red Bluff to Fortuna (not all of that is awesome and I can't remember which parts were good). 199 from Crescent City to the Oregon border. Highway 1 from the coast to 101 at Leggett. Highway 33 between Lockwood Valley rd and Ojai. Highways 9 and 238 in the mountains where I live, and other tighter goat trails.

The FI KTM sounds like it will be good. In 1996 when I was playing moto journalist I got to ride a Honda EXP-2 factory desert racer that had fuel injection and a unique system that used heat from the exhaust to ignite the next cycle's fresh charge, for low emissions. It ran so sweet, with a totally linear power band. The only open two stroke dirt bike I've ridden that was anywhere close to that good a powerband was a Maico 490. Honda made it easy to ride for Paris-Dakar and long desert races where fatigue is an issue. They eventually made a carbureted DP version for non US markets but never did the injected one. It's interesting that KTM's now carrying the two stroke torch. I wonder if it's clean enough to get a California green sticker.
