What would be the best way to get rid of black widows and brown recluse spiders in my barn. I have so many black widows its not even funny and they are the biggest ones i have ever seen. The guy who sprays my house sprays the barn also but it doesnt even bother them. I wasnt worried to much about it but its to the point that every time i go in there and get something there is a black widow on whatever i am getting. I have found 2 brown recluse on my tractor and i dont wont to get bitten by either of them. Any ideas?

I have the same problem as you except I have scorpions too. I have sprayed the Demon WP or whatever its called. It certainly doesn't seem to have a quick knockdown effect neither does it seem to have a long term effect. So I have resorted to another method along with the Demon.

Here's what I do so far.

Everytime you go to a big box store, buy another can or 2 of the wasp and hornet spray. Keep a can on every shelf and every drinkholder on everything you own. Never let a can be out of arm's reach.

Keep a stick handy too so that if you see a Black Widows web, you can spray the spider to kill it and be sure to use the stick to swab up the web. A black widow's web is not spun in any pattern. They are just spun like a drunkard or something. The web is what I look for. The spray will kill them dead.

Squish the scorpions with your boot or shoe of choice. A friend said he put down boric acid in the walls while his house was being built 3 years ago and says he rarely sees scorpions but they seem to be dying if near the house. I have not tried this as my house is built and I'm not to sure of boric acid and exposure to my kid...

I wish I had a panacea cure all to tell you but I don't. I'll quit typing and hope that other folks might chime in with better ideas.

I am gonna have to get a pic of the next big one i see. I have only seen small black widows before i moved where i am at now. The big ball part of the big ones are the size of a dime. I was working on my chainsaw last week and i took the engine cover off and one had a nest in there scared me to death. I just want to get them in control before they start getting into the house. One of the big ones had a red stripe on top of her and the hourglass on the under belly.

And to think, a couple of years back we almost moved to San Angelo, TX.

Yes, there is a lot to be said about living in the northeast. Tornados are rare, hurricanes are usually burned out by the time they get here, forest fires are usually under 50 acres, earth quakes seldom register more than 3, it rains most years .................

Actually, about all we get is weather of inconvenience. When was the last time you heard of town being blown away by a blizzard? You might have to shovel the stuff out of your driveway, but your house is still standing.

Sure, we have to heat in the winter (love stoves and firewood), but we don't get our breath taken away when we step out in July. Nor, do we need oven mitts to drive the car.

We have to worry about yellow jackets (about 4 months out of the year), but no poisonous snakes, scorpions, or bad spiders.

'nuff said - I'm sure start a war with this.:p

That wasp and hornet spray is good stuff, it's killed every multi-legged critter I've ever soaked in it. I'm also partial to a can of WD-40 and a grill lighter to take care of spiders that it'll reach that aren't on something that'll melt. It may be saddistic, but it works every time. Good luck!

Raid foggers in blue can, I don't know if it will work on the insect of your choice but it has killed everything in my shop.
I get dirt dobbers in the summer time building nest everywhere and after I set off 3 cans of foggers I find all species of insects dead and new dead ones for the next few weeks.
I have not found any brown reclues, black widows or scorpions on my place so I don't know the real effect it will have on them but they are still built the same as the others.

Try this website, it has a ton of information on insects and ways to handle them.

Just a small suggestion for removing the spider webbing after killing the spiders I recommend using the Cobweb Winder to coil all the cobwebs into a neat ball. Its simple and easy to get into tight spaces. If you have this device handy the webbing never becomes a problem as its so easily cleaned up. Thank you for the rest of the tips everyone! My battle continues daily trying to keep them at bay. Good luck everyone!

Get a 1 gallon pump sprayer and mix up some Malathion with water. Very economical and kills most insects including spiders.

Like the NE we here in the NW (west of the mountains) also do not have the problems other parts of the country contend with; except we don't have heavy snows either. My wife would go crazy down where yo have spiders. All she has to do is look at even the non-lethal types she gets bitten. She has an allergy to all insect bites. The spiders we do have here are beneficial as they catch and eat a lot of other more venomous insects do we put up with them mostly. At least no recluses or widows.

Not naming any names but it has been rumored that certain Cajuns and Texecans fatten up a few spiders every year to chase furners out of their stomping grounds. On a friendlier note,11 years ago someone in this thread mentioned killing mud daubers around their place. Granted, daubers can cause distruction but if you have Widows or Recluses, daubers are their archenemy and prey heavy on both. Diatomaceous earth sprinkled into scorpion hiding places(esp cracks in earth and brick near foundation)is safe and effective. Most species of scorpions glow in black light. Pre-teen boys make a game of hunting scorpions. Just be sure they don't carry sledge hammers to kill them on your house siding.

I know that this is an old thread but... you had an Australian Redback spider [Latrodectus hasseltii] in Louisiana?

Oh yes, you better believe they're venomous.

When we bought our house the place was lousy with spiders under the porch roofs. I sprayed with this stuff and still to this day, no more spiders. That is 14 years later. They claim 10 years in protected areas and about 7 outdoors.
I also use it on fence posts and in my barn, in fact everywhere. A tiny bit mixes with water and it goes a long way. I use a Wurth pump spray bottle.

Wagtail is right, I got bitten on the leg once with a Redback. It took 2 days but I got real sick and had to have a needle etc

I used to have a watermellon patch where there was a black widow under every other mellon.

I garden spray with Talstar Pro from Amazon, if it creeps, crawls or flies... it dies. I apply spring and fall. It even kills stink bugs by the thousands. The stuff is amazing and cheap. I do ridge vents on the roof, all brick on the house and garage areas, siding within 3 feet of windows, my retainer wall... And I spray my front yard to kill skeeters, fleas and ticks. I should buy a few gallons before some tree huggers realize how effective it is and gets it removed from the market. I learned about it from a pest control guy I called for stink bugs, he was too booked up to get to me and told me that this is a broad-spectrum insecticide. It really is a broad killer of creepy crawlers.

I garden spray with Talstar Pro from Amazon,

Same here, been using this insecticide for 3 years and it is lights out. I also spot spray red ant mounds. Wet the mound and a 2' ring around the mound and then insert the wand into the center and give it a 5 second stream directly into command and control (the queen).

I spray 2-3 feet of the ground next to the foundation and 2-3 feet up the outdoor wall. Inside I spray sparingly and usually only 2-3 times a year. You know it is time again when you see a live bug, normally you only find an occasional dead one.

I also keep a former windex squirt bottle dosed up for spot treatments.

2 oz. per gallon ratio and this 3/4 gallon will last about 2-3 years. House and barn and about 5 acres of spot spraying ant mounds.

Couple bucks cheaper here Talstar One, Talstar P, Talstar Pro Insecticide - Free Shipping

I have a procedure that will work and has lasting effect. There are a couple caveats though - the structure should be basically fairly air tight and no animals, including humans, in the structure within 72 hours after treatment.

What you do is find a Rose dusting powder with pyrethrums in the formula. We use to use an Ortho Rose dusting powder. Get half a dozen empty, DRY cans - we cut the tops off AL pop cans. Put 4 or 5 heaping tablespoons of the powder in each can. Locate the cans strategically around the inside of the building and then ignite the powder with wooden farmers matches. The powder will burn, like a 4th of July punk, and give off a smoke.

Be careful where you set the cans with the smoking powder - it will get hot. Close up the structure and leave it closed up until there is no visible smoke inside.

This is VERY effective but is not a company recommended use for the product.
