Carry permit. Would traffic stop make police be more cautious? yea or nay?

My 2 cents:

I never tell the officer I have a permit or I am armed.(not that I get stopped much) I retired from the job and am able to have a RPO permit. I show them my retired badge. The RPO is good nationwide and in states without carry permits I don't trust that the officer would know what to do properly. Some states require that you inform the officer in which case you should definitely should as a failure to advise might be a charge in of itself.

If an officer is aware from his computer that your grandson has a CCW permit it would inform him that he has been investigated and found to be crime-free. That's always a good thing.

The most important aspect of any traffic stop or police interaction is attitude and behavior. Pull as far off the road as possible so he doesn't have to hang out in traffic. Stay in the car, roll down the window, turn off the music, hang up the cell phone. Turn on the inside light at night. If you have tinted windows roll them all down. Keep your hands in sight and advise your passengers to do the same and have your passengers shut up unless addressed. Listen and obey their instructions. And be polite. Ask if you are unsure. Advise the officer before ANY action. And if it's possible, ask for consideration, maybe a warning. But NEVER say "What did I do wrong?".

I could write a book on it but it's already been done.

Sorry Buggs, you were typing as I was, didn't intend to exclude you. Thank you for your Service!!!

I think that's going to entirely depend on the local climate (are LEOs there anti-gun, as is typical in NJ, NYC, etc.) or not? Has there been a recent cop shooting? Is the officer a rookie? Or just a coward? Or a wannabe storm trooper? Or a decent guy?

Best thing is to know the laws where you are, and obey them. Ohio has been mentioned as a state where you must announce. Other states do not require this.

Clear communication, compliance with the law and with the officer, and a good attitude will avoid almost all problems.

I wouldn't characterize the police's beliefs as being the same as the states. NJ and NY maybe anti-gun states but most of the cops I know in NJ are either indifferent to guns or enjoy shooting as many people do. But they have to enforce the law, and in NJ the law is "no concealed carry" (with few exceptions). You even have to be careful if you have a weapon in the car.

And I holeheartedly agree with what you said, know the law, comply with the law, comply with the officer. You don't have to like cops to have an acceptable outcome to a traffic stop. Be polite and cooperative.

What's a Carry permit have to do with a traffic stop? If the officer ask well of course tell him/her.. otherwise its no different than your Gym membership card or your Diners Club card.

I believe there are only 6 states that require informing if you are carrying and NO ONE has been able to explain to me the safety factor those states have over the other 44.

I see now where I went wrong. When I read the highlighted sentence above, I misunderstood it to mean piloon would never move over again under any circumstances on any roadway. Had I stuck to the parameters of the story, I would have never said a disparaging word. Also, my use of demeaning superlatives was uncalled for in any situation. And finally, I broke the social forum prime directive of typing as if we were talking face to face, where I would never speak in the manner that I typed. Piloon, I apologize.

Apology accepted!
and depending I do move as much as possible (but not crossing a red light).

On another point'
I once parked where there were a string of parking meters and the end was vacant.
Parked and deposited money in the meter to my front right side.
What I did not know was everybody was slightly out of position and I had parked in the last slot where the meter was missing. (snow had covered the lines and perhaps the plow had removed my meter).
Came back to find a ticket on my car.

Naturally I contested and was told that ignorance was not an excuse!
The LEO confirmed that even if a driver runs a stop sign THAT IS MISSING he is still guilty!
To add insult to injury I wasted parking coins to extend the neighbor car's time limit. (no refund or credit against ticket either)

A buddy attempted to make his stop at an intersection (ironically in front of his house*) when the roads were very icy.
When he left he had no problem making his stop but on return they had sanded the intersection and he slid 1/2 way thru, but did make a complete stop.
Dry sand on blue ice is akin to marbles on your floor!
He was ticked for 'failing to make a legal stop'.
He contested but the judge when defining the law determined him guilty. (he crossed the white line)
*Adding insult he routinely sees Jags and BMW's stopped but never ticketed, only small common 'worker types'.
(OK, that was when we had local small town LEO's but that is now history.)

Same small town, local LEO advise me not to make a J turn in a neighbor's drive as he points out that that house is a 'pot grow operation*'.
So being a LEO I ask him what he will do about it and his reply is that he is not a detective and that is not in his job description!

LOL, recently they re paved some roads but have not painted the white stop lines.
Wonder if that would be a legal excuse for not stopping!

Amazingly enough, even though I may not trust a police officer, I do exactly what you described everytime I'm pulled over (numerous seat belt violations).

What I do however find somewhat irritating is when the LEO asks me where I'm off to. Like what am I going to tell him, I was on the way to rob a bank?

My question would be "why do you continue to get a ticket for the same violation". :)

I would not answer anyone that asked me that question, ever.. None of anyone's business..

Simple... If I can put my life on the line in the defense of this country, I see no reason why I should have to wear a seat belt if I don't want to. If I kill anyone, it will be myself. Long time ago I rolled my VW down an embankment when I was young and stupid coming back from doing some ice diving. No seat belt, and 2 full size scuba tanks in the back seat. Dumb luck, still here. It is however nice of the state to be looking out for my best interest though.

Besides that, it's worth the price of admission on how I handle it thanking them for looking out for me.

When it's your time, it's your time.

That said, I am setting an example for my boys and wearing it at all times when thier in the car;)

I think we discussed this situation in the first 30-ish posts of this thread. The LEO could care less where you are off to. Not interested in the answer. Interested in the tone and mannerism of the answer.

Perfect example was Sigarm's video he posted. The LEO didn't care what the driver's answer was to his questions. He cared about the mannerism. Perfect example of an LEO analyzing the person he was dealing with and that person's intent. :)
