Times have changed. Taken from a yearbook in the 80's. Neither person in the photo is me:laughing:

In my opinion it is ludicrous (or down right stupid) to try to categorize honesty and integrity with professions etc...

The majority of the working class do not swear oaths or have granted authoritative powers over civilians...
...it is the power that corrupts

What you don't understand is that because you can't give the percentage of crooked people in any profession, that makes it ok that cops are crooked.

In a discussion about cops, bakers make all the difference in the world.
In a discussion about cops, the life of an electrician makes all the difference in the world.

Doughnuts do figure prominently in a cops world...

What I do understand is... unless you are talking about professional thieves or career criminals the percentage of "crooked people" has nothing to do with civilian professions...it is the power of authority that corrupts beyond a typical percentage of the working populous...

Right is right, wrong is wrong. You will ultimately be judged on your ability to know the difference. Regardless of authority or working populous.

Original subject of the thread
To your point, have a relative in another state who is a LEO. He can see if a driver he stopped had a CC permit. If the guy voluntarily discloses he was carrying, he didn稚 give him a ticket for minor traffic offense-type stops.

A friend of a friend who is a shift worker got stopped in a small Cape Cod town (where winter population is 10% of summer) at 7am at Christmas time, with a partial case of whiskey (no open bottles, but not a full case) seat belted in the front seat, and while carrying. The process that ensued to get him out of the car for a field sobriety test was quite entertaining to read. Again, no ticket.

The best one I heard was a guy who disclosed to the LEO he had a Glock in the center compartment, where his registration was. “I won’t shoot you if you don’t shoot me, OK?”

Two years ago I had been mowing some trails with the tractor, finished, came back to our metal building, and was rinsing off the dusty tractor. I was carrying a .357 revolver in a belt holster, not concealed. A hot-rod-looking solid white two-door Dodge car came down our 500' driveway and pulled to a stop probably 60' from where I was washing the tractor. The car had very darkly shaded windows, with the front passenger window closest to me, and I couldn't see inside. The car looked as if it had no business being on our property, so I started walking toward it, intending to check out the driver. My hand wasn't on my revolver but was also not far away from it. The passenger window rolled down when I was maybe 40' away and I saw that a uniformed LEO was in the driver's seat. I raised my hands up, told the officer that I had a revolver on my belt, said please don't be alarmed, that I would keep my hands up until he told me what to do. He said, "I'm not alarmed, if you don't point yours at me, I won't point mine at you". I guess I looked harmless for a guy approaching while carrying--because no bad guy would break into the building and then stay around to wash the tractor.

It turned out that our security alarm in the metal building had been triggered (false alarm). I was not aware of the alarm. No one answered the phone when the security company called to see if everything was okay. The deputy sheriff in the Dodge was in the area and had been sent to check out the alarm. The deputy and I got along great. In fact, a second deputy drove in shortly, and we all had some pleasant conversation. The deputies told me that there had been some break-ins in the area and that they were glad to see I was carrying. So all ended well, but I thought afterwards that this scenario could have ended badly. One takeaway for me: When in doubt, don't walk aggressively toward an intruder, especially when you have a hand gun in plain sight, until you know the facts that will indicate what course of action is best.

Indeed. You don't want to scare a trigger-happy LEO, and you don't want to forewarn a bad guy.

That's why I like concealed carry vs. open, but then, on your own place rumbling around on your tractor, open is probably a lot more practical. Different problems call for different solutions.

I believe that is the point that many ( me included ) are trying to make. ). It's not that there is a huge % of bad cops out there, vs other people that are bad, while doing their jobs.

The issue is that if your lawn guy is bad.. he might steal some tools from you. When the cop is bad.. you might go to jail and have a ruined life.

Abuse of lawnmowing powers is finite and perhaps just monetary. Abuse of police powers can just outright ruin or derail someone's life.

Yeah I agree.

Just saw stats yesterday that 57,000 LEOs were assaulted on the job in 2016.

I wonder how many lawn guys were assaulted?
