This is a 1987 vintage Ford 5900 that I inherited.

The rear remote has 2 hoses attached from the FEL. Right above where the hoses a plugged into the remote there is another cylinder shaped unit that appears that it might be for a remote that is plugged/deadheaded. 2-3 inches above it there is what looks like a switch.

Does anyone have a clue what the plugged cylinder shaped is??
Does anyone have a clue what the switch/selector would be for?? Is it indeed a switch??

(Note: The switch/selector I'm referring to is about 6" back toward the seat and just above the dead headed cylinder. I may have to clean it up and post another picture.)

Thanks for any info!!!!!!

Is that to switch between feeding the FEL or feeding the 3-point cylinder? On some machines, you can't have both at once.

Since I can operate both (FEL + 3-pt hitch) simultaneously ......... I would assume that is not it.

Again, I will try and clean that up and get a better pic this evening. Thanks!!

I think it a cap over a spring inside it. The spring being part of the hyd. valve that operates the remotes.
It looks like it’s opposite side from the linkage that operates it.

The switch looks like a flow control valve that controls how fast the remotes operate.
On other tractors, the top of the dial to the left is slowest position, right fastest.

Switch is flow control. I have no idea what the cylinder shape thing is. Our 3910 has the same set up, but with dual remotes.

Thanks!! I think you are correct.

I cleaned the switch off after dark yesterday and failed to get a pic before I left this AM.

You can rotate the switch (control) about 15-20 degrees left and 15-20 degrees right. But where it is sitting in the pic is about midway.

It is associated with the hydraulic remote system ....... so..... the "flow control valve" is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I am a hydraulic moron. But, I have managed to chase a few leaks, replace some seals, replace some O-rings, etc. I have a long way to go with this tractor.

Another question ........... There are 3 levers to right of the seat.

The lever furthest to the right in the pic below (with the FEL hose hanging behind it). It is a control for the rear remote ......... but it has 4 positions ........ we can all them ABCD with A being all the way forward and D all the way rearward.

I have determined (through much aggravation) that position C appears to be a neutral position. This is where I have learned to position the control to hookup and unhook the remotes.

With the FEL attached (as in the pic) you have to move to B or D for the front end loader to be operable. Also, if the disk harrow is attached....... I move to B or D to lower/raise the wheels with the hyd ram on the disc harrow. (I think if I move to A I get the same results as with B)

I cannot tell you right off if the FEL works in the A position or not...... I would have to go try it.

Anyway.......... my question is.......... what would the 4 positions typically be for??? I can see 3-position like the FEL lever. But, what would the 4-positions typically be for???

(The rear remote and lever discussed above are not part of the original equipment and nothing is included in the Ford 5900 manual. It was dealer added equipment in the day. There are no visible labels ...... and there may have never been any. I have operated a few tractors over time but not enough to easily resolve every answer...... particularly regarding hydraulics.)

Yes, I know the FEL control valve is leaking. I have a brown leather boot that is now black to prove it. I did locate a rebuild kit and spent a good bit of time cleaning and rebuilding. Still leaks. I am in the process of replacing the FEL control valve. I just have to finish spec'ing the connections out in hope to use the same connectors, etc. I hope to order a new one by end of week.
....... Then I will work on repairing the power steering (hyd fluid) leak up by the steering wheel under the dash area.

I will probably add some remotes once these existing valves/leaks are repaired.

It could be that A is a float position.
When you push it to B or D does it return to C when you let go?
But if you push it to A does it stay there?

Thanks for the input!!! I think you have it. A or B one must be "float".

As I recall (I've driven it a good bit).......... that lever does not move to any position automatically. You have to physically move that lever by hand A>B, B>C, C>D, D>C ........ etc. I understand what you are talking about as the FEL controls do go to center (neutral). One of the FEL handles must have a detent as it will lock at a specific position but both FEL handles usually self-center when released. But........again, the lever for the rear remotes has to manually moved from position to position A-B-C-D.

As far as "float".......... not sure ........ I'm a moron on hydraulics. It took me forever to figure out that that lever had a neutral. It was **** trying to connect hoses when switching implements until I figured neutral out and a couple of other tricks. (I really wish I would have found a forum like this a couple of years ago )

Recently I tried to lift the tractor with the FEL bucket and it would not lift the tractor. I pushed bucket to ground but it would not lift the tractor (but I've done it before). I figured that a leak(s) or pump problem might be the problem keeping the tractor from leaking.

Now that I am learning more, and since you mention float, the float position would probably keep the FEL bucket from lifting the tractor.

I will be climbing in the seat when I get home to check this out........but........ I do bet one position is a "float".

(NOTE: The lever to the right of the seat, closest to the seat, is discussed in the manual. In the picture it is in the highest position/notch referred to as the "position control notch". The manual refers to moving down the notches to add "draft" with the lowest notch being full 100% "draft". I think from reading the manual and reading here at TBN that "draft" = "float". I guess at some point someone changed the terminology. The manually generally describes the use of "draft" for implements working below ground and is load based rather than position based. Position Control, the top notch, has no draft and is just that...... position control only.)

Draft does not equal float. Draft = pull. Say your pulling a plow, it senses the pull on the 3 pth. If the plow digs in, instead of you getting stuck it will automatically raise the plow to where the load decreases and you can keep going.
