We have bars of Irish Spring soap placed where we don't want mices. They seem to work fine.
That's way better than the smell of mothballs IMO. I hate the smell of them.

The best insurance is to have a fully equipped 100 hp tractor with an extendable front plow and an 8 ft rear blower.
That way you are assured that the total snow fall will be less than 6" all winter!
Not quite 100 HP,, but, close enough if the JD 4105 isn't big enough,,,
