Where is everyone getting the Christmas hams?

Best ham I have ever had comes from a small family owned meat market here in Yelm, they cure and smoke their own ham, bacon, pepperoni and jerky. They will wrap the ham in baking paper with instructions on cooking it in the paper.
The name of the shop is Stewarts, the main store is in Yelm, it's old and funky with sawdust on the floor, usually customers are lined up about four deep at the counter (take a number ticket please to be wasted on) and they have a space in the Olympia farmers market as well.

Small shops are definitely the way to go. In Northern Oregon, the place to go is Vogets in Hubbard. In Southern Oregon there are several choices. Within 20 miles of me is Nickabob's Custom Meats in Roseburg and B&D Meats in Winston. B&D does a great pepper cured ham, and I have never bought a bad anything at Nickabob's. They all do a real smokehouse smoke, so the hams are a bit dryer than the needled chemical smoke hams you get in supermarkets. They do not dribble when you unwrap them. The thing to remember about small shops is that you have to order your ham ahead of time. By this week they may be sold out.

I ended up with a 20 lb Smithfield full bone-in ham from Walmart, the largest they had.

I baked it yesterday for our yearly Christmas dinner. We had over 36 people and we ate a little over half of it. It was an excellent ham,

Ours came from Schwan's this year. It was/is very good. We buy a lot of things from them and the guy in the Schwan's truck delivers them to our door. Easy Peasey

Is that open to anyone? If so, I wish you had posted a week or so ago: I'm about 35 miles from you, I'd far rather go to where you live than either Huntsville or Madison. Fork that traffic!

Oh, where be your pics of your ham????????????

If we buy a ham, we generally get it from the local Honeybaked Ham store in town. Pricey, but very good.

Quite late on the reply, but we HAD been buying Honeybaked every year. Until now... We ordered our 12/4/17 for in-home delivery. They shipped it on 12/18/17 and it rolled around all over the USA in back of a UPS truck for 4 days.It was originally shipped from their location less than 100 miles away! Upon arrival it was still cool, but certainly not still frozen. And with all of the crust coating melted off!

In the past Honeybaked had been shipping via FedEx with 2nd day delivery. I'm sure they thought they shaved a few pennies off of the shipping cost, but in the long run, they just lost a customer.

I only did the honey baked ham one time. Line to pick up took 1/2 hour or more to get to the pickup point. Extremely over-priced AND I don't really like a sweet ham. I like a salt cured ham so never get a honey baked one again. The only good thing was the spiral slicing but now everyone does that also. The bad part of the spiral slicing is that the meat tends to dry out much faster than just buying a whole ham and cutting slices yourself.

I get the ham at the local grocery, nothing special, but it is what you do with it after you buy it. :)

Had mine in the smoker yesterday for a few hours. Honey and my rub between slices and all over it. Last hour of smoking it gets a reduction of root beer, brown sugar and crushed pineapple. Fantastic. Almost as good as the day after xmas with that ham stacked in a biscuit with pepperjack cheese.

I just made myself hungry.

The last few years it has been a whole beef tenderloin, seasoned, seared, and then roasted. Another favorite, more for show, is a pork crown roast sometimes adorned with fancy ornaments.

That's exactly why I won't buy a spiral cut ham. The purpose of meat (or any dish for that matter) is to taste good good. Dried out leather doesn't taste good.
