Stupid workplace safety rules

I understand employees getting upset at any and all "rules" "meetings" "training" "admonishments" but they are all simply done for #1 your safety, and #2 CYA, and I'm not convinced of that order.
I won't go into the many, many, many depositions, legal wrangling, insurance adjusters etc. that are currently living in my rectum, but sufficed to say even prune juice will help me out at this point.
Believe it or not there are moronic employees out in the work force, that do some of the most stupid things that can cause one insurance rate to go through the ceiling "IF" you can find anyone to insure you. No insurance no business. High insurance no business because you're working for the insurance company.
The last idiot that worked for me decided to ride up on a pallet on a fork lift because he was to lazy to get the proper fall protection on and connect the safety basket. Apparantly to teh legal profession it's still my fault because I wasn't standing next to him when he did it.
The one saving grace for me and him not owning my business, home, college fund, was that he said " I told him to do it". Well since I wasn't there to do that, I informed him that his statement was considered insurance fraud and that he will soon be arrested by the insurance company. He went running for the hills and has not been heard of since. Another joker worked for 1/2 a day and complained he hurt his back and left to go to a lawyer.
So next time anyone wonders why it's all stupid, thank the guy working next to you for being a jerk.

Speaking to our HR manager (who gets quite frustrated with all the PC) about a managerial role that is coming up, he told me that I wouldn't qualify due to lack of education, eyebrows raised a little I asked what he meant, to apply you have to meet the criteria set out which is a High School graduation (we call it HSC) followed by a relevant tertiary qualification.
I never did the HSC as I went to trade school before the exam year as did a lot of people my age so that puts me out of the running, the fact that I hold a BA, MA and Phd is negated by the lack of a the first, it is a ridiculous situation and happily I am not looking for work but I feel for a suitably qualified person who would fit in well but cannot apply.

That workplace sounds like an "idiocracy".

Resistance is "Almost" futile...

posted a safety notice stating county public Health Nurse requires the flue vaccine each year... and to make sure you get it sign up or submit proof from your physician.

It goes on to say vendors and related services must also have it.

Well, I made an appointment with the county Public Health Nurse who was gracious enough to see me and said it is "Recommendation... not a mandate..." interesting how things get twisted.

When I was approached for non-compliance I mentioned I met with the County Public Health Nurse who said there is no such requirement and presented his business card and said to call should HR have any questions... let's just say it did not go over well.

Technically, it is also voluntary in that you sign a consent form that you have been advised of possible adverse affects.. to give informed consent you must be provided with the FDA literature... which also was not available.

My wife's a department head in a nursing home that requires it's employees to get a yearly flu vaccine. My wife has an allergy to eggs. A mild amount mixed in with a batter and cooked doesn't bother her. But eating even a small bit of a cooked egg will make her sick.

She has to supply a doctor's note every year excusing her from the flu vaccine. The first year, her doctor didn't believe her. Made her take the shot, and she got sick before she made it out of his office. She ended up making a good mess in the lobby when she lost her lunch. After that, all she has to do is call his nurse and they fax a letter to my wife's office :D

I would say supervision and training failed in that young man's case, but I'd still be inclined to speak to the manager instead of to him. Maybe that's because I saw too many fights started when I was a police officer when someone corrected/criticized/reproached another who didn't think it was any of the speaker's business.

I didn’t want him to get in trouble. Sometimes managers and I use that term loosely tend to overreact or lack actual management skills.

I generally have a good relationship with people. I think it helps I’m usually much bigger than them even though I’m only 5”10 and 210 lbs

I took it once and my arm swelled and had a case of the hives... was told later it must have been a reaction to something in the vaccine... duh... you think?

Anyway... since I have been a holdout... realizing that one day I may loose... have been told to wear a mask and said not a problem... employer has not provided them so far...

Like in so many places, one Government's BS comes Head to Head with anothers BS. Health care workers are required to have flu shots, but doing so would violate their privacy as then everyone would know they must have had a flu shot. And of course, the Union is all up in arms about this.

If they aren't supplying the mask, then I guess they aren't worried about it :D

We get safety crammed down our throats at work. I work for one of the largest rental companies in North America, and half the companies we do business with go by a safety score card for there contractors. A person's driving record can affect whether we get a contract or not. Even someone's credit or back ground can effect it. Some of the mandatory training we have had to do is insane.

Being a field tech is even worse. I've had it take two days before to get into a plant to do 10 minutes of work :p Had to go through all of that companies training before I could get in the door. Favorite though was the guard with an AR15 assault rifle as my escort riding with me through the nuke plant :D When going through security with my service truck, they asked if I had anything flammable or could be used as a weapon. I said "Yeah!!!! Half the tools I have in my truck, plus the torch set or welder in a pinch!!. Not to mention the 50 gallons of oil in the two tanks in the bed of the truck!!" I average about 10 background checks a year plus 4 weeks safety training. We have our own with the company, plus customer required training to get into there facilities.

One of our friends had all the clearances necessary to work on nuclear subs... when he retired... the company was never able to find a suitable replacement and lost the contract...

He did agree to keep working for one year for the Navy Account but every candidate came up short...

The biggest problem my contractor friends have is finding employees that have a clean driving record and that can pass a drug test...
