Trailer Deck Finish

Might have to give that TWP a try. I need to do something to the deck on my newish trailer. Picked it up late this summer so have a little while to let it dry & age to hit that 1 year mark.

It's a deck over power tilting deck so I'm more concerned than normal about a slick deck. It ends up being pretty steep. If backing my tractor on I often need to put it in 4wd for traction or the rears just spin. The engine/hydraulic oil sounds a little to concerning about being slippery.

I'd consider some deck stain with some sand or grit mixed in for extra traction, but I hate the way it ends up peeling so quickly.

Any other recommendations?

I use boiled linseed oil. Just roll it on with a paint roller. That lasts about 2-3 years.

I used to use linseed oil (way back when), went to the used motor oil about forty years ago. I just mop it on. Bought another gooseneck, a used 102" by 27 foot deck over last summer, rough sawn oak floor. The previous owner hadn't done anything since he bought it new in 2005. It was always parked outside. Got a good price since we were both convinced I would have to re-floor the trailer. Brought it home and decided to put a coat of used motor oil on it. It soaked up three gallons of used motor oil, reapplied more 10 days later, it soaked it up. Did the same thing two weeks later and had some run off on to my gravel parking area. That's OK, killed some weeds. Regardless, the end result is, I'm not replacing that decking this year. I have access to a lot of motor oil, I'm not going to buy linseed oil when I have this for free.

BTW, that oil is soaked in and the trailer isn't slick. Would I put my wife's white laundry on the trailer? No but, I wouldn't do that on my low boy (all steel) gooseneck either. The motor oil and linseed oil soaks into the wood, it doesn't stay slick.

I don't blame you for using the motor oil......it's free......which is a really good price! LOL! My trailer sits outside all year around.....lots of rain here.......the linseed oil seems to really protect the wood.......I am sure the motor oil would as well.

Not sure how the motor oil guys are preventing a skating rink. My original camp deck was rough cut, non-treated, Amish wood and that thing was stupid slippery when it was wet. The previous owner mopped used motor oil all over it years before I inherited it. I tore it down and replaced the whole thing with PT lumber before someone got hurt or killed.
