I don't know, that "hermit" thing is sounding pretty nice right now. Every single minute fo my day is filled with some customer, some employee, some relative, some friend, some stranger, some anyone asking me for something, wanting me to fix something, make something better, make something work, help them, listen to their problems, loan them some money, buy something for them, etc etc etc.
i think the hermit thing will be needed for me for a short time. I'm like a ferral animal right now when anyone approaches me anticipating what they WANT from me.
One thing I just thought of, for 30 plus years I was the guy who always picked up the breakfast, lunch, or dinner check no matter who I was having a meal with, family, friends, workers, and sitting I can't recall anyone paying for a meal for me. I also have purchased hundreds of meals for my employees and not one of them in 30 years so much even offered me a cup of coffee.

I second that motion. I don't recall what I did, but I had plenty to do. Living on an acreage, there is always something to do; besides I did a lot of woodworking in those days, plus my classic Chevys and the car club kept me busy. We later joined the Elks Lodge, and between the Lodge and the car club, you can be as busy as you want...volunteers are always welcome it seems.

But...as the man said, you will need something to keep you busy. I didn't want anything to do that required much thinking, though, I was ready for some mental relaxation. Nothing like a day on the JD to smooth you out.

YES !!!!! Love that "mental relaxation". I need to turn off my mind, and erase all those little facts and memories to be efficient and on top of things fo rcustomers. I always wondered why the "greeters" at Walmart always looked so happy. There only job was to wave, say hello and smile.

The first couple of weeks after I retired I walked around feeling guilty - like I was skipping school and it wouldn't be long before they caught me. Fortunately, that feeling faded and I now fully enjoy every day away from the office whether I spend it on projects around the property or just being lazy. Viva La Retirement! :)

That sums it up PERFECTLY, I think that will be me, guilty for not going 100mph from sun up to sun down and beyond. No more starting work at 6am and going to bed at 2am the next day.

I never had time for "hobbies", guess I need to learn some hobbies.

My first day was New Year's Day 1997. Same celebration as always.

I think it is good advice to have something to do. Hobbies and honey do list. Keep mentally and physically active. I am still in my working years. I sit at a desk for a living. However if I do not get up and get physically active every day I can feel it. Over the holidays with the temps being so cold it was hard to do, but we had to go out and care for the horses so that was something.

I'm a few years away yet . Though I don't drink anymore I know I'm going take my first day off, sit down with a bottle and reminisce about all the reasons I didn't. Just for that one day ;). Honestly I don't believe I'll miss it. Haven't talked to anybody yet that was 100% sorry they retired

I retired at 55 and decided to spend a lot of time fly fishing, two weeks and I'd had enough and went back to work for myself, now 68 and still working but only 10 hours a week and take time off when I feel like it.
It gives me enough money to live comfortably and not use my superannuation.
With my old job we used to travel to the USA 4-5 times a year for a week each time and it got to the stage it was too much with the fast turnaround and with jet lag you lost track of what day it was, my last stop was always Denver and some of the local police would take me fly fishing when I had finished, that is the only aspect I miss, they were a good bunch and we still get Xmas cards.
Will I ever retire, no idea but I have plenty at home to keep me busy and more pastimes than I can handle sometimes but I enjoy work too.

I'll let you know as soon as I get two more kids through college. :) I suspect it will involve biscuits and gravy, some Bailey's in the coffee and a trip to Tractor Supply to browse around. Or what a normal Saturday looks like. :)

The day I retired they said they took care of my time for that day, and I could leave anytime I wanted. Jumped into my truck, and drove up into Northern Michigan to find me a place to move to. Spent less than an hour at work signing papers and turning stuff in..... Life is GOOD...!!!!! :)

My retirement day will be April 6, 2018. My plan for that day is to come home and pretend it’s Saturday every day- neglected projects, the garden, woodpile, etc.
