What did you do on the first day of retirement?

Went shopping for things needed for my projects.

I don't remember what I did (retired March 1st 2017).

I will tell you that at least once a day I remember that I am retired and I laugh. Sometimes it's just a little chuckle, sometimes its a maniacal sort of laugh.

Then I go and do whatever I feel like doing.

Since I retired a little over 25 years ago, at the age of 50, I honestly do not remember.

Overall - I sure got a lot more done here around the homestead since I retired.

Don't have to worry about "working for the man" any more.

Pay attention to your health and get the projects done early that you want done, or hire someone to do them. I finished roofing my house 3 years ago. Today I'd be lucky to find it in myself to climb a ladder.
Enjoy each day as it comes!

The first day I was officially retired from my job of 30 years, I started my new full-time job....

I'm a long way off to the retiring concept, a good job and work from home. The folks who have the most trouble are the ones who were not busy in their time off before retiring. For example my FIL retired and bought a bass boat. He had never fished in the 20+ years I knew him. Go figure he used it a few times and it rotted in the driveway. As mentioned many times so far, hobbies are key.
Our hobby over the years was always building our home. First one drawn out over 20 years! Then there is always remodeling.

When that all ended, my wife and I started hobbies out of nowhere; she started making jewelry and I started carving stone. So I still work, but at 5:00 we sit and have a bourbon on the back porch. Then we head to our shops and work on our current Jewelry/stone carving.

So the point is, if you don't have a current hobby before retiring it may take some effort to figure out what will be fun/useful. My wife volunteers at Habitat for Humanities, Restore.

I've been retired almost 2 years and still wake up at 5AM every day as if I was still working. For the first day and the next 6 months I spent about 8-10 hours a day tinkering in the garage, organizing things, cleaning out some junk, then a couple hours online to check TBN. Almost felt like a job spending that much time in the garage.

Many days through the summer I'd work only a few hours in the garage then go to classic car cruise-ins and relax with other car enthusiasts. Then winter came and still got up early, plowed snow, cleaned off wifey's car then back inside for coffee and internet time. I spend a lot of time working on classic cars for myself and friends. Cars are my hobby.

A couple months ago I bought a used travel trailer and this summer will do some traveling and camping. Its so nice to kick back and relax and only work when I want to. Wife and I don't have much family time as kids are grown and gone out of state. But most come to visit a couple times a year.
I enjoy being retired in my own way. A lot less stress, Blood pressure came down, able to sit back and smell the roses. I miss the people from work but not the job. I do stop and visit with them maybe a couple times a year and it still feels strange when I leave.

As mentioned, you need to have or get a hobby. At some point I expect my honey-do list to end but so far the list hasn't shrunk much. Seems like when 3 things get crossed off 4 more are added. Just keep busy and the time and days will fly by.

Enjoy your retirement..

The first couple of weeks after I retired I walked around feeling guilty - like I was skipping school and it wouldn't be long before they caught me. Fortunately, that feeling faded and I now fully enjoy every day away from the office whether I spend it on projects around the property or just being lazy. Viva La Retirement! :)

Cannot tell you what to do on your first day of retirement, but do SOMETHING. Anything. My father retired early (age 55, IIRC). His only hobby was playing golf. He became physically unable to do that, and did nothing. I honestly believe that sitting around and not being active played a huge role in his deteriorating health and ultimate demise.
