Oven, do you use self clean cycle or do you use easy off?

I have found that a large baking sheet with a silicon mat makes a dandy drip pan when baking something that tends to drip such as pies and casseroles. They are super easy to clean and stuff tends to smoke a bit less with them.

I use neither one.
Cannot see the waste of energy and extra heat in the summertime, for self clean.. and I think Easy Off could be classified as a chemical weapon.! LOL I hate that stuff
... To clean the oven we pour a cup of water in the bottom, and bake for 30 minutes at 190 or so. I forget what the book specifies. But keep it under boiling point. It's in the owners manual of our range.
...This steam cleans the oven, and most stuff just wipes out.
....if your oven does not have a solid pan in the bottom, to put water in, just use a cup of water in a baking dish.
This method still requires a bit of elbow grease, but works well for us, as we are preventative, and try to clean up any messes before they accumulate.

Don't knock Easy Off.
Great to clean engines and carburetors.*
Also the best to clean slow combustion stove glass doors.

*being caustic however do rinse with lots of water to neutralize the corrosive effects.

There is the real answer. Step one don't make a mess in the oven in the first place, always use something to catch drips, and step two, if something does make a few drips, don't worry about it..

Good points, where I struggle is when we have big gatherings. We are centrally located with a large house and a pot luck style extended family. I try not to police the house but at least one of our 3 ovens plus convention-microwave plus microwave gets a spill over. I like the steam concept and I like the silicone drip liner concept, never used one before.

Bingo... us too! Wife one of 8 sisters and 2 brothers all in 14 years. All still located 'round here. Book club and other gatherings mean pot lucks and the sisters cook up a storm. Not complaining but the aftermath is... well...
