Brett, I know your pain. My wife taught and I couldn't retire until after she did (I make a rotten "househusband"). I retired about 3 months after she did. Good timing on my part as she had a stroke about 6 weeks after I retired (which then evidenced just what type of househusband I was). Fortunately she fully recovered (other than a little lingering vertigo). One plus for me waiting was that a new retirement program (which significantly increased my retirement) was put into effect just before I left. Maybe your working another 2-3 years will bring you something good, too.
I was off for 6 weeks after breaking my ankle. Today is my first day back. Staying home was way more work that actually coming to my job. Being a house husband isn’t for me. Loved the time with my boy though. As for working 3 extra years, it’ll add 9% to my annual pension. I’d say that’s a no brainer. At the current rate, I’ll make more money retired than I will working and I’m 100% ok with that. Not bad for 33 years on the job!
