Oregon Drivers Can Now Learn To Pump Their Own Gas

Must not have enough things to do because I got to thinking about this discussion on the way home last night. :shocked::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Does the Oregonian Pump Attendant(OPA) have a portable credit card reader? All of the fuel pumps I use require me to enter my zip code when I use the credit card. Do the gas pumps in Oregon let one use the credit card without entering the zip code? I do NOT like giving my credit card to anyone because of credit card fraud so handing the OPA my card would not make me happy.

Earlier posts where talking about diesel pump handles being green. I usually see green diesel pump handles but a new fueling station was just built near me and all of the handles are black. They really should be different colors.

Back”in the day” many gas stations gave you S&H Green Stamps when you bought gas.

When I have been in Oregon, the pumps are just like everyone elses. The attendant takes your card, swipes it on the pump and hands it back to you. Then he pumps the gas and gives you the receipt if you want it. I don't think they need the zip code. What a waste.

I've never put in a zip code in any western state.

Can't get gas without here in the SF Bay Area... I always have to provide ZIP... paying cash??? better have no bills larger than $20

If you have a large tank like my 34 gallon tank getting a full tank is not possible... the pump shuts off...

When gas prices were at record prices it was not possible to fill up... two swipes at the same station and the card was locked for the day...

Thought it was like this everywhere???

My visitors from Europe have had a heck of a time in California... their Visa of Mastercard will not work for gas as they have no ZIP code to enter... sometimes the attendant can override if you go inside...

We had so many, we sent them to the relatives back then and I still see them on occasion...

Think I still have an unopened Shell No Pest Strip... maybe worthy of Ebay?

When the folks were starting out the glassware giveaway and trading stamps were the big incentives... with 25 cents a gallon fuel...

Now how many of you recall when pumping gas was just that? You had to work a lever till the glass tank was full and then you drained out the tank into whatever you were putting the gas in. The amount you used was shown by calibration marks on the tank.

I don't remember seeing any of those at working gas stations, however my uncle had one for his farm vehicles, but my cousins used it for their cars (gas was about $.25 per gallon at the local Texaco). I watched my uncle use it and thought it was really old fashioned but coo, that was about 1960, haven't seen another one in use anywhere.

Yes, we gave green stamps in Dad's Mobil service station when I was in my late teens. A number of things I never forgot: (1) it was cheaper for us to buy 10 books at a time, so we did. Not the books you put them in, but the big books from which we tore out stamps to give the customers. But the grocery store across the street only bought a few books at a time, so sometimes he ran out and we'd sell him a book of ours, which cost him less than the way he was accustomed to buying them, (2) some women REALLY wanted those stamps. Mobile tires were good tires but too expensive. So for our regular customers, we'd tell them we could sell them the tires for $1 over our cost, plus the mounting and balancing, but could not give green stamps if we did that. The men always agreed to that. But then one day we sold a set of 4 to a regular customer and the next day his wife came in, wanted to know where her green stamps were. Dad explained it to her and showed her the tire catalog, told her if he's paid the retail price shown in the catalog, we could have given him double green stamps. She promptly paid the difference on the spot, and instead of double green stamps, Dad gave her triple green stamps. We made more money, and she was just happier than a pig in a mud wallow, (3) on several occasions, I needed something (a typewriter is one thing that comes to mind) which I could either buy OR I could get with green stamps. In EVERY case it was cheaper to buy outright than what it would cost us to buy the green stamps.
