Oregon Drivers Can Now Learn To Pump Their Own Gas

Back when gas was well over $3 a gallon I would often run into the 'max allowed transaction' at gas pumps when filling the 32 gal tank on my pickup. I understand the need for imposing a limit, in order to potentially reduce fraud. What was really irritating though was the sign the stations posted on their pumps. It basically said "This pump is limited to $XX on credit card purchases. This is imposed by Visa." Which was a complete lie, because that limit could be $75 at some stations, $100 at others, and $125 at others. If Visa were really imposing the limit it would be the same everywhere. Wish they could just be honest and say it way their company policy.

Never heard of a card being "locked for the day" after using it twice at the same pump. That sounds like another gas station company policy, or maybe a state law. Not a Visa thing.

I've never put in a zip code in any western state.

Why is it done?

Bruce

It's done to verify you are the owner of the card. If the card was stolen there is a good chance the thief wouldn't know your zip code.

Can't get gas without here in the SF Bay Area... I always have to provide ZIP... paying cash??? better have no bills larger than $20

If you have a large tank like my 34 gallon tank getting a full tank is not possible... the pump shuts off...

When gas prices were at record prices it was not possible to fill up... two swipes at the same station and the card was locked for the day...

Thought it was like this everywhere???

My visitors from Europe have had a heck of a time in California... their Visa of Mastercard will not work for gas as they have no ZIP code to enter... sometimes the attendant can override if you go inside...

Similar here. I think I did have to provide zip first time I used card at a new station but after that card is in their system and don't have to provide zip again, Just slide card and enter PIN, max purchase is $75.00, not sure if it will take a second swipe. I just fill up when truck gets down to 1/4 tank.

Back in the day (late 60's, early 70's) I used to pump gas an employee, gave out S&H green stamp, steak knives, glass tumblers, Christmas ornaments, plus gave full service, oil check, windshield cleaned, aired tires, etc. If I recall Sunoco 260 (102 octane) was .30 a gallon.

I don't remember seeing any of those at working gas stations, however my uncle had one for his farm vehicles, but my cousins used it for their cars (gas was about $.25 per gallon at the local Texaco). I watched my uncle use it and thought it was really old fashioned but coo, that was about 1960, haven't seen another one in use anywhere.

We have had a few not in service on old garages around here... I was given one when the garage was being razed.

Back in the 70's the Model A Club was on a cross country tour and posted a picture of the cars refueling somewhere off the beaten path with a hand pump... it was so noteworthy that everyone snapped pictures.

I ran into that one time, some years ago when I filled one vehicle, went home and got the other vehicle and filled it, then was going to get a different grade of gas in my can for the lawnmower. So when it wouldn't accept the card the 3rd time, I went inside and the attendant turned the pump on. So, yes, in this neighborhood it was the gas station policy, not the credit card company; Discover Card instead of Visa.

And I can't even remember the last time I bought gas anywhere without having to enter my 5 digit zip code.

I would run into problems on the weekend when I would fill the family cars... twice was OK but not three times... so if I had filled my truck that would be it for the day...

Don't have any more oil company cards... use to have Union 76 and Mobil... the stations change branding so often it is hard to keep up...

The Valero on the corner change to Shell, then to Citgo and now Mobil in the last 12 months... the next closest station has changed 4 times in 5 years...

Back琶n the day many gas stations gave you S&H Green Stamps when you bought gas.

I was cleaning out my basement a couple weeks ago and found a bunch of those Green Stamps. Wonder if they're worth anything now, maybe to a collector??

As far as having to enter a zip code when using a credit card to buy gas, I too cannot remember the last time I got gas and did NOT have to do that. Seems to be a requirement everywhere around here, even at the Maverick station I use to gas up at all the time.

There are some on Ebay. Look in 'completed sales' to see actual, not hopeful, value.

Need the zip here and you need to enter it every time.

I feel your pain.... '93 Suburban has a 42 gallon tank.

It used to be like that, here. There was a $70 limit on some pumps. Then it got upped to $100. Many times it took two transactions to get a full tank.

My fuel pump went out a few years ago, and the mechanic put one in that has a sending unit for a smaller tank. So now when the gauge hits around E, I still have about 7 gallons left. So I rarely put in more than 35 gallons, nowadays. With gas well under $3.00 now, I don't hit the $100 limit anymore, so I don't know if its still there or not. :confused3:
