What did you do on the first day of retirement?

I think the pioneer stock is the key... simple, honest live... lots of work but not modern day stress.

Everyday, the meal was at 11 am and after Grandfather would take a 30 minute nap and that back to work... dairy farms are 7 day a week operations... maybe it was the nap... also no meds... not even aspirin... that summer I stayed with them I had my vitamins... he wanted to know what was going on... popping pills.

That last line is funny to me because I can see my grandfather asking the same question. My grandparents were very staunch Methodists when the Methodist preachers rode circuits.

Looking back I was very fortunate to have been able to spend a couple of summers on the farm... when I was 4, 10 and 17...

If sure gave me a different prospective... even when I was 17 there was no phone in the house and after supper the radio would go on for the crop report, weather and world events...

Can still picture my Grandparents at the kitchen table reading the newspaper... they loved to read... never had a TV as reception was 1 channel at best...

The home was not "Old" but the lifestyle was simple... wood with coal in reserve for a big boiler in the basement... kept the home nice and warm and provided hot water... radiators under the window sills.

My young brother like to take a lot of showers... he was always going out and one day I asked do you really need to take two or three showers all the time... he was a little miffed... than I said do you know where Grandpa is... He is in the basement chopping wood to feed the boiler so you don't run out of hot water... my brother had no idea.

Sunday afternoon they would have a beer and often visit with neighbors but always had to be back to feed and milk...

Not sure if I will ever retire... but threads like this give me lots to think about.

Stress levels should go way down after retirement. At least mine did. Stress is a big factor, IMO.

Yes, stress kills! Just retiring cut about 90% of the stress. Unlisted phone number took 5% and the rest is about life in general...can't do much about that, short of dying.

Stress Relief is definitely one of the best things about retirement.

I think that is what I'm looking forward to the most. NO more job stress!

I have not signed up yet but the end of next month is it. I am very anxious about the whole thing.

My grandparents lived in an old house. Well built and fairly roomy but it was Old back in the early ‘60’s.

The bathroom was added after the original house was built so you had to go out on a screened in porch to get to it. Had gas heat and plenty of hot water.

I can still remember the smell of breakfast cooking waking me up from restful sleep in a feather bed with feather pillows.

I don’t ever recall my grandparents talking about stressful work.

Takes awhile to get used to!

I don't think anyone had stress in those days, it was just called a hard life. Doctors told us we had stress so lawyer's had something to do and doctors could push pills. We became neurotic in the early 60s.
