Ha, I had one of those on my xmas wish list for two years but I guess that kind of stuff doesn't catch the eye of my family. Let alone the fact they probably have no clue what it is! I'm thinking, heck... here is a cheap gift idea that I will use and really appreciate. At least I didn't get boxer underwear from my daughter this year... she's the one that got me noise canceling earmuffs so I can't complain. :thumbsup:

My daughter doesn't make a lot, single mom, etc - so I give her a list of artists like Jeff Lorber, Dan Siegel, Rick Braun, Boney James, Diana Krall, Doc Brown, Stanley Jordan, Anita Baker, etc, and which albums I don't have yet - she can pick from those, usually a couple - I don't play much lately, so I moved the nearfields and 200 watt sub into the living room, powered by a 115 w/ch Denon - matches the 60" Panasonic tv pretty well, set the Denon for "jazz club" and it's like you're there (minus all the smoke, and a-holes talking over the music ) - all 5 channels are bigger than some people's subs, plus Titanium dome tweeters don't miss out on sibilants so you can actually UNDERSTAND the dialog in movies - car crashes and explosions are FELT as well as heard.

When I get back into doing more in the studio, I'll probably just upgrade it and leave the Tannoys where they are

But for shop (and house) stuff, Mrs. Bukit and I just get what we want for ourselves, and if it's fairly "big ticket" we sing happy birthday, merry Christmas, Marvelous Memorial Day, whatever's closest :thumbsup: - that way, NEITHER of us is too disappointed ...Steve

Oh, and whether you get a better ground clamp or not, get one of these

I keep whatever ground spot cleaned up, and double this strap and put it between the WIRED side of the clamp and the CLEAN surface - it's one of Jody's tricks I modified a bit. The braid stays together better than a short chunk of stripped welding cable... Steve

Thanks for the clamp tip but since Kris Kringle raise havoc with my credit card this past year I went with a $8.00 300 amp clamp for now, 400 seems like over kill for a small 211 Miller. The picture of how you use that braided cable came through a little blurry, might be due to a cranium on the brainium which can lead to a hocus pocus out of focus picture.

If some day in the not to distant future in a galaxsy far far away you start a bird crane reconstruction and start a new thread on it, give a cranium heads up so I get the 411.

Remember, 400 amp is Harbor Freight's rating - I figger it's at LEAST 200 amps (maybe :laughing - but the REAL reason isn't amperage, but OPENING SIZE - I use a LOT of 2" square tube, and that clamp's spring barely allows it to open to 2" -

As to the "blurry" (AKA non-existent) pic, maybe this one's better - -

The idea is to let the braid (or a loose un-insulated piece of weld lead) fill in any voids in the connection between clamp and work (or table, if that's what you ground to) - plus, if I'm using the braid (see pic) I also make sure the half of the clamp that the WIRE attaches to, is on the BRAID side (just in case the clamp hinge is wonky)

BTW, your $8 clamp would also benefit from this, maybe more - here's the original version

Thanks for the pic... explains it for me. I thought you were somehow attaching the braided strip to the clamp. :duh: Sure can't hurt.

I got stuck over at that link you gave (Tips and Tricks) for over a hour, and still didn't get through half of them, lot of them tips I knew, a lot I agree with, only one that made me hiccup over, the one where changing the mig liner every 50 lbs of wire, I was thinking more like 500 lbs. At the shipyard, 50 lbs could be after one day of welding full bore. Although I have noticed that 100s mig wire wares a liner a lot faster than 70s, but still a lot of good tips there on that site.
