From the front view, that VW looks to be the same year as my dad's 1981 (tan) 5spd VW diesel pickup.
My dad has been gone for 37 years now, but I still have the VW diesel pickup.
It has been stored on blocks, in one of my buildings for 25 years.
Has under 60K miles, and is in near perfect original condition, with a black topper.
Should take pix, and list it on E-Bay, but I never seem to get around to it.

Got a 1902 doctors buggy too. Want to buy it?
Growing up, the neighbor wore out a couple of those out.

Do you have a Class A license? If the GVWR on the truck and trailer is above 26,001lbs it’s illegal unless you have a class A license. Non-CDL Class A
Unless its for a farm, then you can often go over 26k without needing a CDL.

I wouldn't want to come to a sudden stop loaded like that.

After trying several angles of approach he brought it around to the passenger side and leaned it up against the door. It looked like he was trying to cut it, but was having difficulty. We continued on our way.

Tow vehicle looks a bit too much down in the rear.
Did you do any tongue weight calculation/measurement?
If your tongue weight was 1598 (min.= 10% of loaded trailer) did you have a hitch rated for 1598 lbs. tongue weight?
I do not believe that there is any hitch sold, that is rated for that much tongue weight, for your make/model truck.
I agree with you, with the gooseneck or 5th wheel hooked up it sets about 2” down in the rear and just barely kiss the overloads. However it rides level and soft unloaded. Ford duallys usually ride 2” lower in the rear than a SRW f-350 due to the difference in factory lift block height on the rear axle. 2” vs 4” (also used to be the difference between F-250’s and F-350’s)
I plan on adding supplemental air bags before camping season this year to level it out. it drives me nuts to look at it loaded.
No, I balanced it out the best I could with the deck space I had. And put it where it “felt/looked” right. I’m definitely had more weight on the truck than with the yellow dump truck and my old 99 f-350. Honestly, I don’t mind a little extra tongue weight with the type of trucks I have had (never have owned a half ton) the trucks can usually handle it.

The hitch is a factory Reese elite underbed hitch system. Rated for gross towing weight of 25,000lbs and a max pin weight of 6,250lbs off of the gooseneck ball.

BrokeFarmerJohn, I do have a CDL (even have passenger endorsement), but most of my hauling is for farm use for me or family, never for pay.

With the old ‘99 SRW I pushed it pretty close a few times weight wise and had to watch how I loaded trailers for weight distribution with bigger loads. I looked at going to a F450 this go round but we use the dually as the “family” truck now for long trips and it was just a bit low geared for mileage.

I hear that. My friend has an F-450 with the same 6.7L Powerstroke that I have my F-250 and the difference in fuel economy is such that it is hard to believe they are using the same engine. Of course the gearing required to double the towing capacity plus the heavier truck are going to make a difference, but wow it really is quite a difference whether towing or empty.

Yeah, I looked at a dodge 6.7 with 4.10’s and steered away from it for the same reason. I have 3.73’s in this one. I’ve put about 6k miles on it since it I got it (has 70k on it now. Driving unloaded on long trips (3hrs to the farm) at approx 70-77 I’m getting 14.1 to 15.6 on average, but it’s been idling a lot. What are you getting out of yours? I hear that deleting them will gain 2-3 mpg, but I am waiting till the warranty is up (March) and I have some extra cash (summer hopefully) before I go down that road.
