How to retire at 55 instead of 65 or 70.

One of the biggest early retirement killers is divorce. Just from what I have seen in friends and acquaintances a divorce will delay retirement from five to ten years. One friend has been divorced twice and widowed once. He finally retired last year after marrying for the fourth time. He was in his late sixties.

I think she has some money.

I also think she chased him somewhat because of his loyalty to the deceased wife who was an invalid for years.

Present wife worked at the funereal home.

Anyway, they seem to be very happy.

Bit of a sidetrack here.

Good friend of mine who is in his mid 90s lost his wife to Cancer 30 years ago. The farm couple next to them lost the man to Cancer a few years earlier. The widower was a goof friend of my friend's wife and helped take care of her as she died. My friend married the widower a couple years after his wife died. His adult kids were very upset. They are still married and a great couple. Warms my heart every time I see them. Who are we to judge.

1. Max your 401k, or save 15% of your savings
2. Pay off your house as soon as possible.
3. Kick your kids off the payroll as soon as possible.
4. Never co-sign for anything for anyone.
5. Don't pay for your kids college, it's all a scam to pay so much with no return on the investment (send your kids to a vocation, not a degree).

I retired at 55 doing all these things after screwing up everything when I was in the Military, and divorced with nothing except a child support payment and a chunk of my pension gone.

What really saved me was not paying for health care as a military retiree, it's allowed us to squirrel away a ton of cash.

Nests are more comfy than they used to be, so there's no reason to leave.

It never entered my mind to stay. I was out by my 18th birthday. But then, I was being shot at and shooting back by the time I was 20. Different times I guess.

I found a few things that have helped me a lot.
1. Dave Ramsey, it was that book that helped me and my wife dig out of medical debt, and then keep the debt gone.
2. While not as much of a help automatic millionaire helped me make saving "automatic" by using banking features.
3. Boggleheads.com great site, very very informative. Filled with all types of people willing to share and help. Going with their 3 fund plan let me cut our financial advisor and all his fees (not that he was doing much just collecting fees on a fund he was paid to sell).
4. Realizing that LBYM Living below your means does not make you "poor", just the opposite.

My Baby moved out last year, he was 29. I didn't mind really, he's a good kid. Just took him a while to figure it all out. That's OK
