only make 8 copies

Randy, I don't remember seeing that (but I might have overlooked it). At any rate, we got the second key today. I told my wife I could buy another key and program it myself for $45 to $50, and then we'd probably do it again if we ever lost a key, so we'd be out $100, or we can just wait until we lose one and spend $115 to $120 to get the dealer to make another one. So . . ., in view of the fact that neither of us has ever lost a key in the past, I guess we'll just stay with the two we have now./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Hmmm...I'm not a superstitious person Bird but I think you just jinxed yourself!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

but if the previous owner has already made some you may be limited in the number of copies you can make.

Nope. When you reprogram a new key for the truck, you must have ALL the keys you are going to use. Any you don't use in reprograming the new key, will not work any more.

Is that what just the key blank cost? Mazda uses the same keys and they are about $25 last time I build one out.

Would not be a bad idea to have a third. Then IF you DID lose a key,[OK, you would not lose it, but it could brake/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif] you would still have two. That way you could do the program yourself, and not pay the hours labor.

Yep, one dealer said $40 and another said $45 (plus 8.25% sales tax on either one).

My wife lost the key (one of two) to our 2014 F250. Replacement was $200. Key and programming.

Ha - you guys think those systems that take the key with a chip/software program are expensive. Wait until you have a vehicle with the "new & improved" keyless system. On my 2017 BMW R1200GSA its $450 extra for the keyless system. God help you, should you loose the keyless fob. Its a flat $500 for a new one. And you don't even get a kiss if you have to purchase a new one.

The joke on this entire situation - "Well, you will never have to worry about loosing your keys anymore". And the VERY CUTE sales girl said this without even cracking a smile.

It is interesting the cost differential in just 16 years for a key. But I guess it is a BMW.

If we rewind the thread another 16 years (1986) it would be " I lost my key and had to go get another one cut at the Truevalue hardware, cost me $3".

If we fast forward the thread 16 years (2034) it would be " Remember when you used to have a key to start a car man I miss those days. Now you have to rely on the retna scan computer to work correctly".

I drive a Lincoln MKX it recognizes me when in 3 feet of vehicle . if walk up and touch the car with out the fob it locks the doors.
can drive if wife is in the vehicle but when she steps out away from the car it" flashes no key detected" and shuts off.
should I lose the fob might as well buy a new vehicle.

Remember when ACE Hardware would copy key for a buck.

The key manufacturing companies today are probably making more money than the auto theft industry.
