Satelite TV Problem Solved

We dumped our Sat a few years ago. I use a Silicon Dust HomeRun Connect. It has two tuners in it and connects your network via ethernet and the antenna connects to the coax attachment. I had a Mythtv pvr i built to record tv shows, then watch them later. I now use a different setup. For $35/year, you can record and that includes the scheduling information that is used like a TV Guide for your system know what and when a show is playing. The recording software can run on windows, freebsd, and linux, next to zero setup. Im watching rerun of x-files right now on joetv.

Its been a little over a week now since I dropped dish. They are already sending "great offers" to get me back. Of course when you look at them, they are not so great after all of the little fees are added on. I was standing over my shredder reading one when I accidentally dropped it in...oops :confused3: I am really liking the Amazon Fire Stick and the Sling service. I really don't have any negatives to report at this time.

Every time I read about you blessed folks with high speed cable or fiber optic service... and how you are unhooked from the landline ****, able to Sling, use your Fire Stick, all Netflixin' this and that, and all the stuff like that.... There is a jealous part of me that wants to say " you can just kiss my ".. [ BUT THEN, I hear a little voice in the back of my head that says " be nice, be nice now " So I don't. And I just go on plodding thru life with my DSL and landline phone..... [ sniff, sniff-sniff ]

Checked my speed, 51 meg down 5.2 meg up. Much faster is available from the cable company, I just have the "basic data". It is all about what you want to trade off. I live out in the "country" technically. I CAN fire my pistol into my gravel pile, or blast a varmit if I need to, and while I don't have anyone "in my face" as the next nearest house is about 100 yards away, I am sure you have a LOT more space. You have traded that wonderful isolation and living space for low speed data. It is all about what your priorities are. You have made your choice and I have made mine. I live in Suburbia, and you really live in the country.

Jerry, you don't have 4G cellular in your area?

I can get cellular or sat internet, but the DSL has no data limits... $79 a month for phone and DSL via Frontier.... Mr. Obama was talking about trenching in fiber for all of us ' out there folks ', and now Mr. Trump is talking about it. And even Great Lakes Energy is starting a trial up by Petosky. So, I figure come Spring, when the frost laws are taken off the roads... that there will be a truck and trencher crew headed up here in my area. I am stoked...!!!!! :)

Well good luck, I'm hoping it comes to us as well.

I've got unlimited on my phone and iPad and I have a Cantenna (Verizon) for the house for a desktop and wifi but that is capped.

This is my situation also. Lots of isolation, and I would not trade it for high-speed internet. That's been a hot topic of discussion lately in Nevada; reading the articles I was startled to find that most of Nevada has no fiber-optic cable or dsl or other means of providing high-speed internet. Only in the big cities -and there's very few of those. Even cell phones don't work in most areas. I have cell service where I live but its spotty and weak.
Guess that made this area a good place for Google's latest project. These balloons have been launching for several years now from the Winnemucca airport - that's where the photos in the referenced article were taken - but here in Winnemucca we've yet to see any benefit.

About 15 years ago I was in off the path little alpine villages in Austria and everywhere they were running underground fiber...

It was decided to connect everyone and that is what happened... 3 homes clustered at a crossing and Fiber was going in.

One of my USA friends back home who is about as anti-government as they come said what a great thing... I looked puzzled and said I thought you hate centralized planning?

I guess we all have exceptions.

Anyway... I was high up in an alpine hut really on the top of the alps and they had fiber... gas lights, wood cooking, etc... with a solar array and battery for their guest to connect... this was in 2014

I asked the in keeper if they went to all the trouble why not run phone and electricity underground along with the cable... was told it was a regional wilderness area... so electricity is a no go if possible but Fiber was paid for by the government... called it investing in the future.

The Government funds you refer to is CAF, stands for Connect America Fund and is in full swing. But don't get your hopes up. All that is required is 10 meg
