I went to our local Braum's Ice Cream store recently; it was fairly crowded...and as I was fighting to get my truck into a small parking space, some guy in a Mercedes whipped into a handicapped parking spot; jumped out, and scampered in like a monkey up a coconut tree. Of course he didn't have a handicapped parking sticker; and to put it mildly, it really chapped my arse.

They issue too many tags.

Not when I tried to get one for my Dad. I took him into DVM, had him walk in there at a snails pace with his walker, wheezing all the way so they could see. They denied it. Maybe I needed a Dr. note, I don’t know. He passesd a year or so after so no big deal to me.

Generally they want a doctors note and in a case like your dad's his Dr probably wouldn't have an issue with writing one up. We got one from the doctor who operated on my wife's leg (had to ask for it, but he had no problem writing a note for a tag), I plan to take it in to the town clerk this week and getting a tag.

All I could add would be that there are a LOT of mentally handicapped people now in this country. Phones, food, drugs, government and on and on. Perhaps they should issue hang tags for people who can pass a 3rd grading reading test, climb a ladder and stop at the second last rung, refuse to eat Tide Pods and can run with scissors.

The local drug store sells novelty signs...one says "Stupidity is not a physical handicap...park somewhere else"

In Tennessee, you must have a DMV form signed by doctor. Also, it has box to check for permanent or temporary (6mo) tag. Temp is a mirror hanger that is red versus blue for temp, and has the expiration date on it. I got one after knee replacement.

Local city also has a guy on full time handicap duty, checking tags, mirror hangers, etc. He will even write up folks if they park over the handicap lines a shade !

They probably DO issue too many tags/hangers.....but the requirements for businesses having handicap parking gets kinda stupid too.

For example, we have a local fast food chain that is strictly drive-thru.....no inside dining, no restrooms, no outside tables....nothing....just drive in one side, pay, drive around the other pickup food. They do have 3 parking places so you can pull on up and eat in your car if you want (99% drive on out)....not even an outside trash can to put your food trash in.....and one of the spaces is marked for handicap....just because the local requires a certain % of spaces to be marked handicap.....remember, absolutely zero reason to exit the car, so handicap doesn't come into play.....just has to be, because.

I don't know about any difference in the states, but here, there is a form for a doctor to fill out. The only thing you can do at the DMV is get a blank form, if your doctor doesn't already have them, and take the form to the doctor to sign, and designate whether it's a permanent or temporary tag being applied for.

Similar situation but he had a sticker.

LOL, I asked the guy if his handicap was mental.
Oh, but he drove a BMW.
Seems they consider themselves privileged.
I often see them diagonally across 2 handicapped spots as they are in a hurry.
One had the nerve to say he'd just be 2 mins.

Today I also have a 'sticker' as I have COPD.
Generally COSCO is mainly where I use it or the local grocery that has the milk and eggs almost as far away as the length of a COSCO parking lot is long.

I have always defended 'sticker parking abuse' as we have friends with a retarded child that have been denied a sticker because she (the child) is not the car owner.
And shucks, now I are one (COPD @ 40%) but that's better that the first diagnosis as they thought cancer.
Piles of tests proved that to be a false trail so I'm rather happy to be only COPD.
Thank goodness we have Medicare in Canada as otherwise I'd have had to sell my house.

Same here in GA and the doctor's signature has to be notarized... the forms are available from the DMV site...

There is also an option for someone that uses their own vehicle to transport an individual that is handicapped...

What gets me is seeing someone go to a big box store, park in the handicap space, and then walk a mile inside the store. Or the people who sit in their car, blocking traffic, waiting on the space, so they can walk a mile inside it.

I have a friend who has cerebral palsy. His legs are deformed but he can walk with the aid of a cane. I meet him for lunch only to see him walking across the parking lot from a far away space because the handicap spaces are all taken. I watch the window as we eat and see all the permit people casually stroll from the dinner table out to their car without a care in the world. I've started to go out to them and raise **** with them but my friend tells me not to do so as he's used to it. Really burns me.
