Yeah, I wish I had come away with the knowledge that the engine had been repaired to such an extent it would not let me down. Neighbor came by, told me I needed to clean the heads better, and then asked me wether the torque was oil or wet or dry. Guess that is a call to Deutz. But it was a good experience, learned a lot.

No, the good news is that this hopefully will convince the wife I need a shop sooner.

Just a thought, but a little distilled water sprayed into the intake of a HOT engine does wonders for decarbonizing a head. (Lookup up water gas reaction, if you are the curious type.) There are lots of YouTube videos. Just make sure that you do it with the engine filter off.

All the best, Peter

Well, finally got the Deutz back together but cannot run it due to not having a wheel motor.... Glad my neighbor is a diesel mechanic. Did not know about wet or dry head bolts, and would never have torqued it correctly (90 degrees past 160NM is a heck of a lot of torque). I was sweating after 8 bolts. He told me that on the big cummings, it is 300 NM plus 90 on 32 bolts. He says he trades off with a guy so that the job gets done (he does a few, the guy does a few, he does a few).

Note to self, let the pros do my CAT3126....Yikes.

I had to go to 3/4" torque wrench to get my Ford pickup wheels torqued up. It is ~36" long, which helps. (I couldn't even get the bolts loose with a 1/2" impact wrench set at 600ft-lbs.)

All the best,

Peter

With that kind of torque, I'm surprised you weren't required to purchase new bolts. I always thought high torque bolts were single use...because they stretch when first installed.

Yeah. Deutz said new bolts were not required. Made a point of that

Started the Deutz up today. It ran, that is the great news. It smokes, at this point a bit worse than before I took it apart but it is too soon to tell. I have an engine issue, will need to get the engine rebuilt in the next couple of years. But it runs...

Yah! Back in the saddle again.

Congratulations!

All the best, Peter
