Anyone know how long it takes live oak trees to dry out?

I find that if cut to length, split and stacked under cover, oak still struggles to dry within 2 years, so I always allow at least 3.

Some people will look at the shakes in the end grain, or knock 2 pieces together and from the sound tell if it is "dry" (but how dry is dry ?). That only works for me with softer woods.

If I'm unsure about how far timber has dried, I measure the water content by weighing. The way I do it is to cut out thin disks from the centre of a few lengths, weigh them, dry them by the fire, then weigh again. If you are not certain it's fully dry, keeping weighing until it looses no more moisture.

Percentage water content = (weight lost / weight of wood) x 100.

It’s a phantom 3 pro. I’d have to say you are far more seriously into this than I am. I’m happy for now to be able to retrieve it within my 21 acres.
I have some JB 2 part epoxy I’ll likely use this time. Got word my cable will likely arrive Monday.
When my friend, Canada Dave crashed his last week and wasn’t sure of repairability he showed my the phantom to magic kit - interesting. He as able to repair his with the super glue/baking soda combo.

Good morning from east Slovakia, where after a pretty warm period the weather is moving hard below freezing for the rest of February and first days of March.

Big plus is that the mud will be frozen. :)

Today I've got to train some new ewes I bought what an electric fence is and why they should avoid it. Which means putting something tasty on aluminum foil...

34 today, supposed to hit 47. Up early, going to breakfast with friends. Got a little plumbing to do, then I'm going to relax. Or maybe not. Seldom goes to plan...

Have a good one!

Good morning. I always just let my goats hit it. Never trained them, they taught themselves! Or mud is melting, the road repair guys are very busy. Hope you have a good, productive day.

Good morning all. Not sure if Davis make a professional version, but thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, for not much money you can buy a fairly sophisticated piece of measuring equipment that I find really useful for weather conditions like today, when local conditions allow dense cold air to gather in ways that are somewhat different to those predicted by the forecasts. The device samples the air temperature thousands of time throughout the night, integrates the numbers and in less than a second gives a prediction on the weight bearing properties of the soil. This morning that bucket was frozen solid when I kicked it, so like "freedomlives", I reckon I can be out mud free for a few hours.:)
