DST is the only way ever devised to get people to go to work an hour earlier in the summer. Working construction our day started at 7 AM DST. With a half hour lunch, quitting time was early enough we managed to miss the worst of the heat. On the farm, our work day started at 5:30 or 6:00, but an 8 hour day was a fiction.
For a while, I worked for a city building department. I tried and tried to get them to start work at 7:00, but they refused. The contractors were really in favor of earlier hours, but 8:00 was welded into the boss's brain. Whoever thought up 8-5 was a moron. DST is the best we can do.
