2 Tractors or 1 Tractor? What do you own??

3 acres, I have 2ish lol. 48hp cabbed with loader for roundbales. I recently bought a 99 JD 455 for mowing which I am going to fit a 3pt Limited Cat 1 on.

90% of my tasks can be done with the 455 once I add a 3pt, the 48hp tractor will just be for the cattle addiction lol.

Cabbed tractor with a good heater is 10,000 times better in the windy winter pushing snow.

I took care of my mothers 35 acres for 5 years with a swisher winch powered bucket on a 09 350cc grizzly, before I could afford a tractor, hauled sandy creek gravel and dumped on the 1/4 mile driveway. Multiple ways to do things I guess. I moved about 15 tons of gravel per season until I built up the drive enough..... 250lb bucket loads, took forever, but cheaper than delivery and better than a wheel barrow. I could prob move that much material in a weekend now lol.

One per implement would be best :)

I am leaning towards that plan :)

I have a tiny place, have no need too mow pasture as it is grazed, if I had a bigger place, I would add more graziers :))

I would fence and find a way to use whatever tractors I wanted to own to do other stuff, going around in circles on 25acre sounds to me exactly as you say.....going round in circles,,,,and it won't stop.

PS I have a neighbor that said to me one day, he wont have animals, they are too much work, but then he sits for many hrs many days a week mowing, that is burning fuel and taking time, my mowers are slow, and need only a refuel of water, I often think about the trouble they are as I listen to that mower slugging it's way around with a sweaty operator....lol

If only they could graze all year long. That would be ideal.

OP: if you are not using your pasture, and don’t have the option to rent it to someone who can use it, why not plant trees and let it revert to forest? Better wildlife habitat, and much less maintenance (no mowing). It would eventually provide income through timber or sooner if you chose fruit bearing species.

If you were to only keep one of your current machines, the JD4200 compact would be the one to keep due to it having a FEL and 4wd. It can run the same brush hog as the 870 (love the 70 and 90 series compacts).

Currently have 2 tractors, a 3038e w/305 FEL and a 1025R FILB (loader+backhoe). We have 4.3 partly wooded acres at the house & 20 acres 1/2 woods 1/2 fields about 12 miles away at what was the wife's old family farm before being divided up. We have a 20'x22' tractor storage shed at the house that can house both tractors & most of the implements (mostly on dollies). We also have an 18' car hauler used for tractor transport.

The 3038e spends most of the mowing months out at the acreage (under a shelter) & used with a 60" rotary cutter to keep the fields from getting overgrown. It will come back to the house if we need to run the post hole auger or wood chipper & over the winter months to be available for snow plowing.

The 1025R gets used at the house all the time. It is used for cutting the development road sides w/ a 60" 3PT finish mower, transporting a water barrel + pump for the wife's plantings, digging for planting areas & projects, moving downed timber, pulling a trailer for collecting tree trimmings, etc. It gets used quite a bit moving a bucket of mulch (AKA aged wood chips) at a time for dressing the wife's plantings.

Cannot see downsizing to only one machine (of either size).

To some of us it's a waste to let a good field go back to brush.

I took this pic yesterday,, we will be letting the land go back to trees,,,

Actually, I am planning on purchasing "grow tubes" to protect the poplar sprouts that come up off the stumps.

If I understand poplar growing capability,, my daughter, who is standing in the picture, should be able to sell the trees during her retirement.

"Brush" is good!!

I have two just like the original poster. A Ford 4610 SU for hogging and a Workmaster 50 with FEL for most everything else.

A comment was made about a different tractor for each implement. Back when my dad had his 3 small cattle farms we did that.

A D17 Allis was hooked up to the haybine, the Super A Farmall was our rake tractor, and the 180 Allis was hooked up to the round baler. Our loader tractor was an old 861 Ford. These pretty much stayed hooked up during hay season. Later the 8050 was used for hogging while the other D17 Allis was used to plow. We had a M Farmall that was used intermittently.

Pop utilized a rear set of hay forks on both 17's to feed rounds in the winter along with a bale spear on the 861 Ford. With the 3 small herds at different locations a tractor at each one was needed in lieu of driving on the road during the winter. Pop would take the pickup to each location to feed the cattle. Took quite a bit of time but he enjoyed it as long as he was able.
