3-Point Hitch Broke my PTO Differential Gear Case. Bearings shattered!

Always interesting to see inside equipment.

As to the paint, the chassis is painted after assembly so replacment parts like that will typically be bare metal.

If you don't want to buy the kubota paint from the dealer I've found that rust-o-lium "charcoal gray" is a very close match.

Agreed. I bought a quart of rustoleum charcoal gray to paint a bracket for rear remotes on my new B2650. Along with some touch ups. It was pretty close. If your want to get it even closer you can SLOWLY add some gloss black to darken it just a little bit and it will be perfect. Don’t go to much tho because it darkens while it dries. This worked great for me.

Nice progress. Are you still taking to a shop to get the bearings reset?
Interesting enough, the bearings are easily pressed in by hand. They are a tight fit but nothing like some of the motorcycle transmissions I've done were you need a puller and a press. Both axles came out with little effort. They have bearings that sit in the case as well. The bearings can all be gently taped in with a rubber hammer and a piece of wood. So it seems I won't have to be taking this to the transmission shop after all.
I had to order a couple more parts. Mostly I'm waiting on the dow pins. The old pins were too hard to removed from the case. These are critical for keeping the axles stable. Also, there were a couple of dow pins that sheared off on the PTO cover. So as soon as these arrive I will get started on the reassembly.

Kubota is really proud of their rattle can paint, its like $13 a can. By the way the Kubota bright orange...is actually the current darker orange. I purchased the other one thinking it was darker, its much brighter than the bright orange. (face palm)

I did purchase the Kubota Gray paint. I will say that it did spray quite well. It matched the other gray perfectly.

I finally found time to finish the Kubota and get everything back together. The one thing I didn't like is the fact that Kubota didn't use any kind of gaskets. They rely on silicon sealant only. I made sure all surfaces were perfectly clean before I reassembled the parts. For those who are curious what it looks like internally, below is some photos of the axles and lift arms before I installed them.

Nice job.
Looking good.

Aluminum has a tendency to absorb oil and other chemicals. So after installing everything I decided to paint the new case. I first used a 2 part mix epoxy primer. Then I used the Kubota brand gray paint.

I also have a photo of the slide and lock feature. The slide and lock isn't much of an advantage if you ask me. Although it was completely my fault, this is what contributed to the PTO shaft breaking my case. When I hit a small rut in the field I lifted the tiller and these slid in and locked shorting the distance between the tiller and the tractor. When I let the 600 pound tiller back down it shattered the PTO bearings and differential case. It was one of those moments.... standing out in the middle of the field and seeing hydraulic fluid pouring out the back of my tractor thinking to myself... why didn't I take the time to size the PTO shaft? What can it say?

While I had everything apart, I did some upgrades. I had purchased a quick hitch I didn't find it to be quick at all! Most of the time I struggled to get the equipment hooked up. I use a lot of different implements and they are not all from the same manufacture. I always had to adjust the top bar at the very least. And if the implement wasn't on level ground it was very hard to hook up. So I purchased a pair of Pats quick hitch lift bar links. So far they have worked wonderfully. Much better than the Kubota quick hitch. Below is a photo of them installed on the Kubota B3200. Just a quick note the slide and lock feature no longer will work with these mounted. The are too big and don't allow the link bar to fully retract and lock. I will purchase new lift bars without the slide and lock feature soon.

So, about $800 dollars and 20 hours later everything is back together and working again. The only problem I had was the back PTO cover. I struggled a little bit trying to get all those brand new bearings and gears installed corrrectly. I must have touched the silicon because I have a very slight drip coming from the back cover. I decided I'd run the chipper and break in the parts for a bit before resealing the cover. The good news is that it's easy to get to and will only take about 30 minutes or so. All the other seals held fine. So attached are some parting photos of my B3200 chipping away.
Even though it's not the chipper the broke everything, I have a photo of me shorting the PTO shaft for the chipper just to be safe!

Glad you got it finished. I still can’t believe it was that cheap to fix it.
I bought a tiller for my B2650 and the shaft was perfect with the quick hitch. If I were to take the quick hitch off i would have to shorten the shaft though. I need to keep that in my head.

The shaft is pretty easy to shorten. I used a my reciprocating saw or "sawzall" if you will, with a bi metal cutting blade. Less than 10 minutes from start to finish I was done. That includes measuring, marking and cutting. Well worth the effort and peace of mind!

Sometimes on smaller tractors the shaft length is critical. Too long and we see the result. Too short and the shaft pulls apart.

In your case paranoid caution should prevail. Do some critical measuring to make sure your shaft doesn't pull apart thru the entire range of the 3pt. You've already learned the longest distance is with the 3pt raised.

Excellent work on your repair!!!! If all you got was a small drip you did very well. Thanks for posting this thread and the photos!!!!

Agreed. General rule of thumb is you want 1/3 the length of the shaft minimum inside each other.

Thanks Richard. Everything was really tight on the PTO assembly. So I figure I'll run it for a while and everything should slide back together again much easier.

good job! I say you just park that leak over that pesky weed until you you find a "roundtuit".

Go to a Yamaha dealer and get some Yamabond for sealing motorcycle cases. Great stuff.

Excellent thread and documentation with quality workmanship. That's not really all that expensive for what could have been much worse.

What happened was the implement came down fast and with force and the PTO shaft poked the back of the tractor in and broke it that way. I've done this before and only ruined the implement and did not damage the tractor. It still cost the same money, however. This thread should be required reading for all new tractor owners.
