JD 6400
My JD 6400, power quad, after baling, bush hogging, working hard for 1 to 2 hours will act like u randomly push in the clutch for 3 sec and let it out for 3 sec repeatedly until u stop and let it cool. then u can work for another hour and it starts again. The 3-pt lift also is very jerky and not smooth. This all started after the main hyd pump broke and JD dealer replaced.

Your oil might be getting too hot to work. It can do this if a valve is cracked barely open, or dead headed.

Another possibility, on some older deere like the 3155, there is a pump in the back that picks up the oil to feed to the main pump. If it is out, you will have to split the tractor.

All this happened to a friend about 10 years ago, so the information might be a little rusty...

Thanks Kyle: JD REPLACED both pumps 2 years ago. Had less than 40 hr on the repair before I got the chance to work it hard/long enough to have the issue. JD sent a Tech to the field but it had cooled off and wouldn稚 replicate the issue. Pump pressures were in range tho. Going thru chemo that year so didn稚 use the tractor much. Finally got them to experience the issue but haven稚 found problem.

I had a similar issue on my JD 5520 a few years ago. One of the remote levers was stuck just a whisker off center and oil was not flowing. Wiggled the levers and all is good now. In solving this, the dealer had me get a remote temp gun and check the axle temps during arm up and use. I've done a couple threads on this.

I had the same problem on some unused remote valves on our 5420....The lever's pivot point had gotten corroded and needed to be dis assembled, cleaned and greased.

I have had problems with my remote hyd control valves sticking plus they freeze up in freezing temps. I disassembled them and had a lot of corrosion. Ball bearings and washers badly corroded. Worked fine after repair. In cold temps the front end loader joy stick will freez up and have to run tractor for 30 min to operate. Disassembled control valves, seem to be getting Moisture inside. Could this be part of problem? Maybe not getting control valve repositioned properly????

I'm thinking it's a high probability.

Definitely yes. I've had to tear down the FEL joystick "column" twice, to lube it up. All my symptoms are caused by storing outside and a need of lubrication.

Thanks for feed back. Will relay info on to JD dealer. Unfortunately they have completely tore tractor apart, been working on it for 3 weeks and of coarse haven稚 found the problem 😳

Let me add more to my post #4. The dealer had me use a laser temp gun to check the temp of the axle and trans while in use. The high heat I recorded, he said, was a result of hydraulic lever malfunction (or something like that). Mine was a complex thought process but easy answer.
