I went to refuel today and the white plastic screen inside the fuel filler neck just fell into the tank and promptly disappeared to the bottom. I am thinking its no big deal and won't hurt anything and I sure do not want to buy a new fuel tank.

What do you guys think?

Something must have broken on the screen to enable it to fall into the tank. Those grabbers just may work if you can run the tank almost dry so you can see it.

Thanks, that is so obvious and I never thought of something like that. I was frustrated but now I have an excuse to buy something cool and useful! (To George for the retrieval tool suggestion and link to new strainer).

It appears to just ride on a small lip molded into the filler neck and on mine the lip is barely there like the injection mold ran out of plastic. I am going to stop by the dealer next time I am that way and look in a tank to see if mine is normal.

This just happened to me on an xu6168. Dealer said it's very common and LS strainers suck.

Good info...but, but, $49 for a 50 cent strainer?

That price is for 2 strainers but does seem high. It was the first site I came to doing a search. They may be available elsewhere for less. The OP can search on his own for better priced strainers.

I think that if or when my in-tank strainer breaks, I will just use a super fine screen funnel. In-tank strainer looks to be rather cheap quality and with dubious filtering capabilities. Fit is very loose in tank opening.
