Rounded off drain plug

I have to wonder how many people still have 8 point sockets?
They are handy for the random old square nut and pipe plugs.
I try and keep a hand full of hex headed pipe plugs around to replace the old square ones.

I still struggle to understand how an oil drain plug seized absent dissimilar metals. It should have went in with plenty of lube on the threads. Unless the oil has never been changed or someone hammered it home as has been described. But on a tractor who takes them to a shop for oil changes to subject them to being hammered......

I know guys that use a rattle gun for everything. Then there are those whose torque methodology is make up as tight as it will go, then go another round". That is how some of this stuff happens.

You were not told correctly. You are spoused to tighten it up until it breaks AND STOP JUST BEFORE.

I knew a maintenance mechanic at a plastics factory. He said their rule was:

Whatever it is, run it wide open until it breaks.

I think that is a transmission drain plug, so 14" crescent tighten till the second squeak.

I always start the engine up after the oil stops dripping and let it run for 30 seconds, to make sure that all of the old oil is out so that I don't contaminate the new lube.

Now you have a proper drain plug made and tested to not to round off even with an impact wrench. Great job.
