You do know that lithium doesn't make up much of the actual battery right? That's like saying cars are going to be infeasible to run because the price of synthetic oil is going up.

Re: boat batteries, lithium is a great fit there. They can discharge deeper and with at least twice as many cycles in addition to weighing an order of magnitude less.

Here in hydro power country our rain has been over the average for the last 2 years so we are set for now. I sure wish I could pay 2 cents per kWh.

Yet the batteries keep getting cheaper. Part of the price rise is supposed to be because of the Chinese control of many of the mines and production. Flip side is that companies are looking to open Lithium mines in other places, such as in the old mines in Cornwall England and Germany.

Everything I read from people installing LiFePo batteries on boats is that the prices are falling and are expected to continue to fall.

The thing about battery technology is...it will only take a few major advancements in perfecting things like hydrogen fuel cells etc., etc...and the need for many batteries will simply go away...

I would love to see a universal group of batteries for different applications apart from the usual AAA-AA-C-D cells, point in question is my camera, Nikon D300S is similar in spec to a friends Canon, the batteries in both are identical in voltage and capacity and case except the terminals are on opposite sides.
I am sure this is across the board with many products, to be able to buy one battery for similar products would save the consumer money but of course that is just not cricket is it?
This principle applies to many products not just batteries, make it fit just one application and we have a monopoly, the old loser pays rather than user pays.

There's 18650 and RCR123A which are really common in the flashlight/high power draw space. Heck the last shortwave receiver I bought actually runs from a single 18650. I think thing preventing it from being used across more devices has to due with the fact that accessories and usually the part where margins are very high. Heck, the li-ion batteries for one of my radios is 1800ma and yet it's an eye-watering $75.
That said you see 18650 in a ton of places and occasionally RCR123A as well, it's just that the devices need to be built from the ground-up to support lithium voltages since the scale is quite different. That's actually one of the nice things about LiFePo4, a 4S(12.8v = 4x3.2v) pack gives you very close to what you get from 12V automotive. I've got a 4AH LiFePo4 pack here that's lightweight enough to just throw in your pocket.

There is nothing to perfect in hydrogen fuel cells , they work very well . Btw tell us about the source of H2, H2 storage and transportation of the H2
