NYC...The world's largest collection of opportunistic hypocrites in the history of civilization...!
...Let something go haywire and they put on a big dog and pony show displaying how united and together they are...but on every regular day of the week they won't even make eye contact with each other or say hey or nod to acknowledge one another...(other large cities in the N.E. exhibit similar characteristics...)

I grew up near Binghamton... there they call it the "southern tier" which is a little better.

For what it's worth, my family being from NYC would refer to Tarrytown as "upstate" as well. What does that make Buffalo?

Easy for you to say, the worst city you have to deal with is what, Columbia or perhaps Orangeburg?:D

Not since I retired. I do sometimes incur delays when traveling through Clemson. There are four stoplights on US 123.:)

I grew up on the northern edge of Dutchess county, moved into the lower end of Columbia county a few years ago. When people ask I always said I live in upstate, but usually specify that I'm in the mid/Hudson Valley region.

I hate the politics here but love this area. I adore the Catskills and look forward to seeing them come into view after a trip out of the area.

If you're gonna get upset at what passes for journalism now days, you're gonna spend a lot of time upset.

We do the same but it is mostly because it rains all the time and if you look up to say hey, your face gets wet.

We were neighbors. I lived in Pine Plains for most of my life.

Western NY [or Erie, PA] :D

It seems that to many in NYC everywhere else is a foreign country.

The flip side of that problem is just as prevalent- everywhere I've ever traveled, when people find out that I'm from NY, they just assume I'm from the Big Crapple [or just can't fathom that I'm from a small town further away from NYC than from another country or state...]

Sigarms,
I知 sorry you have such a poor opinion of your time in NY. The politics are not great, and like every state in the union, there are issues.
I was born here, raised here, and plan to die here. I know it will cost me more, and I won稚 have the same reedoms as some people in other states do, but I DON探 CARE! I love NY, I love our beautiful 4 seasons, I love the Adirondacks, the Catskills, Lake Placid, Niagara Falls, and even New York City! And of course my hometown Syracuse! I can hunt pretty much year round for anything from small to big game. Some of the best freshwater and saltwater fishing is in NY State. The taxes are high, but we have one of the better education systems in the country, including some of the best colleges and universities in the world. That痴 just a few of the great things about NYS. This is a GREAT place to live.
Itç—´ fairly common knowledge in NY that ç*¥pstate is pretty much everything north of the Tappen Zee Bridge (NOT Mario Cuomo Bridge IMO). I知 not sure why you need to take very opportunity to disparage NY State. I have a lot of respect for your knowledge of firearms and read Todayç—´ Gun Time all the time. I seem to remember you served in our armed forces - thank you for your service to all 50 states.
Don稚 plan to step foot in NY ever again? Fine with me really and I知 sure most New Yorkers would agree with me.

Otto

You mistake my frustration. I love NY state so much that it just ticks me off that it seems that only NYC defines her (and writes her laws). I can also assume you've never been so much in love that after the breakup, you just found that you couldn't see her again?

My disparagement isn't with New York State, but New York City (and yes, although my boys know I never want to set foot in that city, sooner or later we will catch a broadway play before they graduate high school).

New York state is amazing, so much that I've never set foot in NYC and never had any qualms about it. My parents not only went out to Utah after I told them about the area, they also went to Watkins Glenn on my advice as well and the surrounding finger lake region. Also got to see Donovan McNabb play at the Carrier dome, and ironically enough, I'm was and am an Eagles fan, being able to watch Bill Bergey play in the vet prior to seeing McNabb LOL

Some of my fondest memories are from paddling the the Moose, Bouquet, Johns Book and Black with my buddies (my car could pretty much drive on it's own between Watertown and Keene Valley LOL).

Now, in complete honesty, since I had a back operation about a decade ago, added the fact that sooner or later I'm going to have to have a shoulder replaced, I have no qualms about missing snow and having to deal with it.
