Yeah, I guess I should differentiate that for us, too. We have Northern, Central, and Southern Illinois, and the IL DNR even has a map to delineate them for the purpose of defining hunting seasons. It's pretty much just the people in Chicago who use the term "downstate" to describe the rest of Illinois outside of Cook County (or Chicagoland, as they like to call the area).

I live in Southern Illinois ... which is downstate. :D

The thing is depending where you are within the state of Madigan people will call parts of the state different sections. If from Chicago, then Champaign is considered southern Il, Springfield considers themselves central IL, Which I guess you could consider then north central. I consider the I-70 corridor as central Il, and south of I-64 as southern IL.

Ok, youæ±*e forgiven. :).

And I do agree that Cuomo HAS GOT TO GO.....unfortunately, the alternatives offered so far for the upcoming elections look more like sacrificial lambs than candidates for Governor.

Heck in Illinois, Madigan pays the republicans to loose. And if you are a democrat that goes against his word, plan on having your name removed from the ballet on a technicality, having another democrat run against you in the primary that you will loose your reelection bid in.

What beef have you with Buffalo?

Not that it's particularly near and dear to me in any sense...

I assume one reason is because in most statewide and national elections, the results from NY usually look something like this. And blue wins the state believe it or not! Thus getting all the presidential electoral votes, or determining the senator, governor, etc.. That's why we have Gov. Coumo. :yuck:

The terms up and down to refer specifically to North and South, is a relatively new concept. Traditionally, up and down or upper and lower would refer to elevation or distance from a large body of water, usually on the path of a river. Consider Upper and Lower Canada, Upper and Lower Egypt, upriver, downriver, uptown, and downtown.

Eastern Maine is referred to as "downeast" which always sounded odd to me.

For what it's worth, my family being from NYC would refer to Tarrytown as "upstate" as well. What does that make Buffalo?

When I was a teenager (1960s) the "cool" radio station to listen to was WKBW from Buffalo. Boomed in like a local at night here in northern N.H. I remember them referring to the area as the "Niagara Frontier". Was that a term the locals used, or was it just one of those radio things?

South Carolina has an Upstate -- I have a residence there.

OK, I get upstate, midlands and low country, but Pee Dee??:confused3: Must be an interesting story there...

on every regular day of the week they won't even make eye contact with each other or say hey or nod to acknowledge one another...(other large cities in the N.E. exhibit similar characteristics...)

And this differs from large cities in other parts of the country how???

When traveling to the place I used to have in Saranac Lake, NY, I never considered myself to be upstate until past Albany on I-87. Really do miss the fishing up there. Hunting was better at the camp I had in Tioga county PA which was just south of the "Southern Tier" of NY state. Both places were the first to go after personal and financial reversals.

Yeah, I always wonder about Pee Dee. I used to have a vet on Pee Dee Road in Bliss, NY, never asked him.
"Niagara Frontier" was used but now the deal is to refer to Buffalo-Niagara or Western N.Y.

Many wealthy people and companies have left New York because of the obscene tax rates!

There is a New York STATE? I thought there was just a CITY called New York.....

Joking. Some people have not heard of Washington STATE, they think Washington is just DC.

I have always heard that update NY is very rural and beutituful. Never been there.
New York state truly is beautiful.I live in the St.Lawrence River Valley(think Thousand Islands),foot hills of the Adirondack Mountains(the Park is 6 million acres). The scenery is beautiful, the hunting and fishing great.I can see Canada out my front door;so we are about as much removed from the city as possible.
