String trimmers

My wife loves her little battery powered trimmer but she only trims the easy stuff around the garden. And it died after four years- let the smoke out of the motor. I do the rest and use a Stihl FS250. We have a 15 year old FS85 as well but it just can't handle the thick grass we have. The 250 is heavy and uses a lot more fuel than the 85 but it's almost unstoppable. I got a big roll of super heavy line and also use a grass or brush blade when appropriate. Switching to a blade is a hassle because you need to change the guard to the small one if you want to be effective.

I've two Stihls, one in Mississippi, one in Virginia both excellent and with about 5 years of use.
BUT if you are not going to use one for long periods I'd highly recommend a battery operated solution. Probably half the problems posted on here are due to poor gas and maintenance.

Yep, I've had Stihl in the past and don't think they can be beat for gasoline powered trimmers. But now . . . well, I have the EGO 56V string trimmer. Mine does not have the quick string reloading system that they now have available, but I have a spare spool, so I keep the spare loaded and it doesn't take long to change if I run out of string in the one in the tool. And when I finish, it's no big deal to put string on the empty one to be ready next time.

Hate string trimmers, bought a brush cutter. Can use a grass blade or light brush blade, mows around fence posts w/ no hesitation, effortless. Have over 500 fence posts, NO patience for cordless/elec.

Does enjoy fuel however. It does have a string head which will never see light of day. Last trimmer I intend to purchase. Always starts, always cuts, one inch brush, no issue.NO regrets. Get the results for which you pay.

Daughter wanted a string trimmer for her birthday. I advised her to ask for the HF 40v Lynxx, get whatever use she could wring out of it and consider it a throwaway. Wife went to get it for her and bought the 2 year warranty. I usually hate/reject the extended warranties, but maybe justified in this case.

A couple of thoughts from 35+ years in property management.

Echo has done me real well... still have my first Echo Brush Cutter/Trimmer... SRM-300 bought in 1982... never touched the motor and all repairs have been through accident except this week the rope pull clock spring broke.

I have also used throw away sting trimmers as well as Stihl products... and all have provided service.

Stihl Dealer Days promo is over but they run Father's Day specials and if you buy the Stihl oil the warranty is doubled.

I'm going to buy a new Echo and for home owners the warranty is 5 years!

Echo also has an extreme special... for one day only... individual dealers have 20% with the factory team on site.... this Friday it will be 15 miles from here and I plan on buying several Echo power tools.

Chainsaws, Trimmers, Blowers, Edgers and Outdoor Power Equipment | ECHO USA

Echo also has a 7 day return policy....

One thing I do not skimp on is using either top of the line Stihl and Echo 2 stoke oil...

We just picked up a 40v Ryobi hedge trimmer with a 24" reach. Works great. Good around electric fence wires and posts. Cut up to 3/4" thick. Quite handy.

I've had a Shindaiwa T242X for the last 6+ years. Worked flawlessly. Due to my health I can no longer use it. My neighbor saw it in my outbuilding and asked if he could borrow it. Told him it's been hanging in the building for two years with the old ethanol gas mix still in it. He took it home and dumped the old fuel out and refilled. Started on the 3rd pull. It had been a fantastic trimmer when I used it. He was impressed with it as well.
