Wire clothes hanger alert

I’ve thrown away hundreds of metal coat hangers. My work uniforms come on wire hangers and they add up pretty fast getting 10 a week.

Yep same kind of issue for me. Get them by the dozens with cleaning. I wonder if I could accumulate them and take them to the scrap yard.

In Australia, most dry-cleaners will take back wire hangers, to re-use them. It's probably worth checking if your cleaners will re-use the hangers.

Uniform company where I work collects the hangers but there's no incentive to return or repercussion if you keep them. The material quality has declined from 20-30 years ago.

There's no financial incentive to return hangers, in Australia. The incentive is to do the right thing from an environmental point of view. There are dozens of processes involved in the production of a wire hanger, from the mining of the ore to make the steel, to the coating of the final product, with transport involved multiple times throughout. Every one of those adversely impacts the environment. Why not simply return the hangers to the cleaners, and help to preserve resources and keep the air and waterways clean?

Instead of wire hangers I have been using suspended ceiling wire. Dead soft. Easy to use a twist. Reasonably strong and reasonably inexpensive. Available at your choice od big box stores such as Lowes Home Depot etc.

I agree on the environmental issues, and return what hangers I don't need, the wife wanted a handful of them, but the rest go back.

I haven't run across any wire clothes hangers in years. Well, tonight, I found them in 10 packs at Wal-Mart. They're coated with some flexible kind of plastic, vinal I guess. Most will go in the car, truck, etc. for emergency repairs. In the years I've been without them there have been many temp fixes I made when I've used something else and thought, clothes hanger wire would do a much better job.

Hit any place that is supplied by Cintas for there uniforms. If the driver is lazy and doesn't collect the coat hangers regularly, then chances are good the place is over run with wire coat hangers.

My mother used to make little Xmas trees out of them. She used to stop by the shop and I would hook her up with bundles of them at a time.

I don't think I've ever seen any of that. Next time I'm in Lowes, I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for that suggestion as well. Unfortunately, I don't know any places like that.
