Hello Radios1,
I subscribe to "Farm Show" as well, the problem is we are looking at our keyboards and offering our advise and council with our years of combined experience for what he is describing.
Having the simplicity of a mid mount PTO with a single stage snow thrower like the Reist Series 1000 in a wider width(5 feet) as long as it does not have a leaking seal and the drive lines and carrier bearings are greased will last a very long time as long as it it maintained. A mid point PTO seal leak requires the transmission to be drained completely to allow the seal and seal housing to be removed and replaced.
He has to have the ability to spread grit at the same time he clears the road of snow and having a rear mounted pendulum spreader like the Vicon gives him the most flexibility to do this.
He has to obtain 90 day quote for the repair and installation of the mid mount PTO and the carrier bearing and drive shaft.
Both Pronovost and Riest can provide front mount hitches for snow blowers and he has to decide whether he wants a three point hitch mount from Pronovost to carry the snow blower or a simpler system for the Rieset series 1000 single stage unit.
The Riest series 1000 single stage snow thrower will have plenty of torque and power as the snow blower rotor is 13 inches in diameter and it is much much simpler than a 2 stage snow caster as it does not have a impeller fan.
The Riest series 1000 single stage snow thrower operates between 600-700 RPM with the chain driven rotor just like the older single stage snow throwers on lawn tractors.
The mid point PTO on his mule will most likely run at 2,200 RPM at high idle and the prpeller shaft will operate at that speed through the carrier bearing and then the universal joint(s) which are attached to the 1/1 right angle gearbox which then transmits the power delivered from the Mid PTO to a cross shaft that rotates a smaller roller chain sprocket that is connected to the larger single tooth sprocket attached to the snow blower rotor.
It all comes back to the servicing dealer and the quality of work that they do and how well they follw the instructions on a different implement installation like a front mounted single stage snow thrower driven by the mid point PTO.
IN SAYING THAT using an propeller shaft driven front mounted snow thrower like the Riest series 1000 in a 5 foot width
will be simpler as the spreader can be left on the three point hitch all winter as long as its left empty and covered with a tarpaulin or the vicon hopper cover until it is needed to spread grit if it is left out side with the mule.
