My mother made liver and onions, but she's an Irish cook. Set the pan on medium and let it the liver cook for about an hour. Don't even flip it, just let it ooze. Onions in a separate pan. No milk soak, flour or seasoning of any kind. God it was awful.

You should see what my parents do to steak. Should be a crime.

When I went to college, my Italian buddies literally re-educated me in cooking.

Glad you had good friends to teach you. Good food(even Liver & Onions)if cooked properly can be amazingly good. I'd never had a round steak that had any flavor or that was tender until we began using the slow cooker. Now even lousy cuts of meat are tender and flavorful. Hooray for good food!

Back in the BC - when we lived in AK - had a friend(ham radio op) who lived in the UP of MI. We visited one summer and he took us all out to find and dig wild leeks( a mild type of wild onion). She cooked them up with some moose liver we brought down for them. Now that gal - she knew how to cook liver & onions.

Maybe its just because I like good liver & onions. Like good lutfisk & lefse - - Ja. And Rommegrot for dessert.

Lefse sounds palatable. Lutfisk, not so much. Just found out there were some Norwegian swimmers somewhere back in time that migrated in to my gene pool. It is probably the food that made them leave.:licking:

My mother was 100% Norwegian - my father was 50% Norwegian - - that is the excuse I use for the way I am.

OH - Good Lord - Lutfisk - - it is DEFINITELY an acquired taste. I can remember at Christmas - mother always made Lutefisk, lefse, boiled new potatoes, green peas and cream gravy. My aunt would make the Rommegrot(uber rich milk/cream custard).

The "making" of lutfisk had such a, lets be kind now, unusual odor. I think the neighbors thought we had found a dinosaur and were boiling it in a pot.

I can remember, as a youngling, having my mother put a small portion of lutfisk on my plate - I HAD to eat it all. It smelled so bad and tasted even worse - I can actually remember sitting at the table crying because I had to eat that crap. Now - I really enjoy good lutfisk.

Ole and Lena were sitting on the porch and smelled an awful smell. “Dere must be a skunk under da porch!” exclaimed Lena. “Vell,” said Ole, “just throw some lutefisk down dere. It’ll be gone in no time.” Lena considers this and says, “Ooo, vell, I don’t mind da skunk so much.”
