You might try one of the motion activated water sprinklers. Critters get within a certain distance, they get a good spray of water. Here's one from Havart.

There is no sure fire repellent for deer. The common tips and tricks have varied results depending on your deer.

Sometimes you get lucky and find one that works.....for a while.

Hunting pressure helps some but they would just come at 4am

The only way to for sure keep deer out is a physical barrier.
A single 8 ft fence, or 2 parallel 4 ft fences with 3-4 feet between them.

Even then you will occasionally get one that makes it in!

Milorganite. It's a fertilizer product sold at the big box stores. Made from the treated solid sewage at treatment plants of Milwaukee Co, Wisconsin. I know, doesn't sound appealing, but the stuff is highly refined and there are no pathogens that survive the high temp production process. It's an awesome fertilizer, and the deer won't go near it. We started using it last year. We've got it on trees and bushes that the deer have mutilated in he past, and they now won't eat anything where the Milorganite is spread on the ground. My wife has a loquat tree, transplanted from my mother's place in Florida, and the deer had eaten it to a nub every year, five years running. Last year, we started putting the Milorganite on it, and it's thriving, unmolested by the deer. The grass near wherever we put this stuff also grows really fast, lush and green.

The only recipe that I've found to work:

Electricity + Energizer + Wire/rope/tape

None of which is home made. :)

I'm familiar with the product; didn't know that it would repel the deer. Thanks for that bit of info.

And thanks to everyone else for your responses. I'll whip up something...probably a combo...if I still have any tomatoes left this morning.

I now recall reading a report on this. If memory serves, with little rain, deer will avoid areas where Milorganite was applied for up to 30 days.

I have not personally tried it yet.

I wouldn't use an egg mixture on tomatoes - it can get to smelling pretty bad and I imagine it would taste worse! I don't think Milorganite is safe to use on vegetables either. Something about the risk of heavy metals/toxins that can be found in a sewer system. For vegetables I think fencing is about the only way to deter deer.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I have never used any. To date the deer only eat maple saplings. The even stay away from our flower beds and garden. They walk right through the yard but don't touch a thing. knock on wood.

Seems we're on the same diet...except mine eats low cal. 150 grains with a little more caffeine... LOL!

We have lots of deer in the hayfield area, and around the edges. There is a 5 foot chain link with the spikes turned up around the 0.6 acre yard area. I have never had a deer in the yard in my almost 5 years of owning the place, and there are lots of tempting bushes and flowers in the yard. I know it's only 5 feet, but it works.
