Go on Cargurus.com and search for a Chevy Work Truck. Basic trucks sell for around $23K.

U.S. auto debt stands around $1.2 trillion right now. It's crazy. I inherited my dad's 2003 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. Right now it only has 123k miles and has always been garaged. I had to rebuild the transmission 1.5 years ago. That, a throttle position switch, both front wheel bearing and some transmission cooler lines and I am about $5500 into it. Still a bargain. I need a truck that can haul my stuff and if I had to get a new one right now, I don't know how I would bring myself to spend that kind of coin. So, I take my little commuter car to work most days and let the truck sit in the garage to keep the miles off of it.

Buying new/stripped is getting way more challenging.

As others have touched on, IF models are available, then your life is a lot easier if you are a commercial Fleet Buyer...... many dealers can't be bothered to (not allowed to ?) talk to anybody else..... they are making much bigger $ on $60-100k mall-crawlers.

Used..... like anything can be hit/miss. Really basic trucks often tend to get pounded on pretty hard, just in a few years. A supervisors truck that may have had a gentler life, often has more bells/whistles.....

Many people like the modcons on new trucks, but the reality is that many systems have a design life just outside of warranty.

Up here in snow country, I'd pay extra to get hand-crank windows. Not joking. Some power windows hang in, but since many modern window regulators aren't built out of much more than dental floss and tinfoil, they don't handle ice well. Window switches..... don't get me started....

Modern trucks have progressed in many areas (ride, comfort, safety.....), but that added complexity has several prices attached..... esp. if you own it past the warranty period.

Does added complexity turn Vehicles Sales over faster ? That topic is worth a thread of it's own right there, IMO.

Rgds, D.

Grew up around the car business... Dad's friend did fleet sales and always had to throw in or eat the Full Wheel Cover and Cloth Interior for Mayor and Police Chief.

One time it caused a stir because several were delivered with full wheel covers instead of hubcaps.

Factory was short of Hubcaps and substituted.

Now that I have everyone's attention!☺

Curious about other's opinion on trucks.
(I'm 65) I've had a truck except the last few years. I shouldn't have traded my '96 Chevy Cheyanne in about 2010...it had 36k miles, 350, manual, long bed, tow pkg. Otherwise "stripped" but how I ordered it. A farmer bought it within a few hours.
What I can't understand (don't want to make anyone mad)...but a truck should be a truck which you can't find much anymore.
I want 2 door, no carpet, a.c. is ok, vinyl bench seat.I don't even need radio.
Years ago all brands had their great models, and you could get full size or mini (4 cyl, fair mpg).
Around here every day you'll see one person driving a crew cab, tiny bed, all the frills, 4x4, tow pkg (never used), they're like $65-$80k. I can't understand. Why can't you buy a new stripped truck at a good price?

Hats off to the advertising department of all the manufacturers convincing people they need an $80,000 truck to go to the mall.

It is a metric indicating just how well off many are...

The old story of "Wants" vs "Needs"

I tend to go the other way... almost a badge of honor extending the service life of something already bought and paid for... true... rust isn't really a factor where I am.

I think it is great for those that desire a 100k truck making it a reality... Trucks are a market segment that provides a lot of US jobs and very American at that.

You could always factory order. Pretty sure Ford, GM, & RAM still offer basic trucks, even tho dealers don't stock them.

Sometimes that happens. Material and parts delays by suppliers, etc. :confused3:.

Over the years, I have waited as little as 3-4 weeks and as long as 4 months do to a parts shortage. I have never purchased a new vehicle off the lot.

We have order a few cars... BMW for factory pickup... Toyota Corolla and got to watch it being made and brother's Super Duty...

The BMW was actually the fastest production date... the Super Duty the longest.
