I hope it does have limited slip on the rear end. No 5.0 available in the F250 6.2 gas or 6.7 diesel. He got the 4.3 gear on the rear end with the brake controller, 12.5K hitch, installed a gooseneck himself, rated at 16K with the gooseneck.

This thing has a mountain of low end grunt.

That would pull well. You did type 250, but I guess I was thinking 150.... some years back I believe the 6.2 was available as a 150 special order (?).

This is the Eaton unit:

Eaton ELocker Differentials, Electric Locker Differential - Vehicle - Eaton

I've seen it listed as a factory Ford option, at least on some trucks. For work use, I'd take a 2wd truck+Elocker+decent tires, over many 4x4 stock setups+mediocre tires.

Of the "3", the only standards I've seen lately in full-size trucks are Dodge 3/4 ton+ trucks, and AFAIK, only with the Cummins. Nice powertrain, but not what I'd call a low-cost work truck. Don't know about the windows...

I learned this recently as well. If you want manual and new, this is pretty much your choice. We bought one. Stripped with vinyl seats, no carpet, manual tranny and Cummins. Had to order it.

My current truck is a 07 WT Chevy in 2500 trim. It was taken to an up-fitter and had power window lifts put in. It has air, automatic, tow haul mode, am fm, etc...Certainly enough for me. Mainly has the 6.0 with 4.10 gearing for better pulling. I did get a decent deal on it as it was a salvaged unit. Had to put in a new engine as the old one lost compression. I figure that the other one had a lot of miles on it. That is the deal with salvage units. With what I paid and what I have in the newer motor I am still ahead of a new truck purchase.

Ordered a striped down 4WD for work about 20 years ago. Truck showed up and they sent one with cloth seats, carpet, cruise control, stereo, etc. Had pretty much every option you would want for a plush street vehicle for the stripped down price. Some dealer just wanted the white optioned out truck off their lot. Boss said stick it in the fleet and run it. Researchers took it to the beach and trashed it the first day. I decided not to have my people clean it and to make them live with their own mess.

Go on Cargurus.com and search for a Chevy Work Truck. Basic trucks sell for around $23K.

Be careful using Cargurus.com. It cost me money that I did not plan to spend. :)

There were always spitting out ads for trucks and I clicked on a used Ford F150 so daily I saw F150's for sale. One day a 2010 Ford F150 with 205K miles and in much less than mint condition popped up 50 miles away.

One day I was wanting a way to take the Ford 3000 with the Ford 711 one arm loader to tractor shows but now was not the time on many levels. Finally I requested more info but the dealership never replied and I expected they were just going to dump it at some car auction since selling them to the general public is often a lose/lose for all parties on old trucks with needs to be addressed.

Well I went the Harbor Freight to get the 40 volt Lynxx chainsaw several weeks later and since the dealership was only about 3 miles away I drove by. I thought I saw it so I pulled in and was looking at it. The sales lady came up and I asked her if this was the F150 with 205K miles. Turned out it was a 2011 but she said the one I was talking about was on the BACK row.

The battery would not even light the dash but they jumped it and got it started. I was expecting the 5.4 engine to sound like a diesel running but it was very quite actually. The next day my son wanted to see it so we checked it out together since one of the power locks does not self lock any longer.

They had had it a few months and the rotors were rusty so I knew it had not been driven in a while. The 3.73 limited slip rear end sounded like someone was banging it with a hammer when trying to cut it hard in a parking lot.

The son was for me getting and going up to $7500. They had been asking $10K and I wanted it for $6K due to it needing body work and a windshield and who knows what else.

It being rated to tow 11,200 pounds (with the full Max Tow package) and the hitch rated at 11,500 pound was of interest plus it had the tailgate when let down contains a drop down step and a pop up handle to use when climbing up and down.

They pulled the rear differential cover and let me look inside and refilled with with spec gear oil and the Ford Limited Slip additive and the hammering was much less so I drove it home but it cost me $1400 over my initial offer. So far so good but time will tell. It is as the body shop currently and the new windshield (just under $200) already makes it look better. The body work quote was $$850. I am dreading putting in the $25 lower blower door motor but the new improved Ford part hopefully will outlast the the truck. At least after I do it the motor will will be much more accessible if there ever is another time. :)

For a TV that is not a daily driver or required for life I just did not want to get much money in it plus I am saving $400 a year in insurance over the 1998 S10 Chevy that I gave to a friend plus it had 350K more miles on it than this 2010 Ford does.

Locally the white service trunks is about a cheap as new gets. Some companies will let staff buy even new ones at their fleet price.

Supply/demand and profit

Think about it from dealer/makers POV - bigger power plants/better transmission cost serious money to develop, flashy plastic/fake chrome, touch screen stereo and light up emblems cost nothing. So, toss in 10k of “extras” - then discount the price 1500, goes along way to paying for those development expenses.

From the buyer perspective - less than 5% are cash buyers, so by forcing a decision of either no new truck or a loaded up machine with payments, most will go with the over priced machine they can buy today in 84 monthly payments.

I got my dads 2012 1500, a few years back...plain, white long bed and tow package - interior is basic as possible, just am/fm and AC, auto and cruise. Just turned 11k miles....never gets much use, but couldn’t stand the thought of selling it...,just too hard to replace @ what I’d get from selling it now. Only regret - wish it was 4wd, but shopping for a 4wd made me realize how much I’d have to invest to “upgrade” so I’ll live with it.

djefferis what I hear from some involved with auto financing is that many buyers are only interested in the amount of the monthly payment and not really concerned with the selling price.

Sales tax adds no value to a truck but the more you pay in sales tax in my state the more you pay in tax on that vehicle each year. The taxes saved can go a long way in reconditioning a current truck or a solid used one. Cost of collision insurance can be an on going concern. What city drivers pay for insurance is more around here compared to rural farm areas.

Cost of truck ownership is never cheap but if one wishes the costs can be managed to a degree. Currently we have four drivers in the house and three pick up trucks but the daughter's 2007 Dakota is the only daily driven truck. Both kids are in college so keeping them in cars while in college is something we plan to do. Since we live 20 miles from town I like us to have options in case of a dead battery or flat tire when needing to leave for work or class.

In this state we pay the sales tax once, but the excise tax to register is based on the new list price, prorated as the truck depreciates. So when the dealers/manufacturers play the "high price talk us down" game it ends up costing us more over the life of the vehicle.

Then again maybe not, if all manufacturers jack up their prices equally.

I bought an 02 Dmax dually with a lot of frills on it. Now it has 130k on it and my wife dropped many hints I should just buy a new one, just because. We have the money and a monster camper to pull which my truck pulls with no problem. I did go down and priced a replacement of the equivalent and found it to be 60K+. I paid 44K for mine originally and eventually spent money on injectors and cab corners. Stored in an air conditioned dry garage.

I have 2 people that were hounding me to buy it because it still is a very nice truck and am considering it, but I find I really like driving it. Because if this thing lasted 15 years and looks and drives so good, I imagine a new one would last till they plant me. On the other side, I would think a new truck would depreciate in 1-2 years more than the whole value of my truck, and that is why I seem to be keeping it still. It is nice riding and I don't think I would ever buy a stripped down truck. I need many of the bells and whistles to make life comfortable.

Olde School  My hat is off to Dodge (just smart business, IMO) for keeping this option alive.
