I am putting a 2"receiver hitch in the 3/8" thick butt plate of my winch. I run it on a 30 hp L3010 tractor that weighs about 5000 lbs. My little dump trailer is 4' X 6' and is rated for a 3000 lb payload. Can I just weld the receiver tube into the plate with a circumference bead on both the front and back sides, which was my plan, But not knowing about these things I wonder if I need some additional bracing ?? The tube is 2-1/2" X .220" that I got at a friendly welding shop. I cut it 5" long and it will barely protrude on the front side. Thanks.

should be fine but if it has any directional weight a couple of gussets weld on it will help.

It would most likely be fine but I would add a piece of 2x2x2 angle iron on the underside at least, the tongue loading if you get to bouncing in the woods could be high;
also when towing a trailer on anything 3 pt mounted I would strongly recommend a stay chain from the drawbar mount to at least one of the lift arms to prevent the towed item from pushing into and possibly lifting the lift arms, it doesn't happen often but you can get the lift arms shoved right up into the tractor as they do not have an upward travel stop.

I would add a gusset to the top and bottom just to be safe. Maybe a triangle piece vertical on top and sideways on the bottom.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have no feel for the kind of forces that occur in a trailer hitch. I wanted to keep the bottom clear if I could to make it a little easier to put the pin in since it is up behind the plate. So this is what I ended up with.

Does look good. The only thing I would or do add on these is a 3/8" band around the outer part of the receiver. Adds strength to the outer edges so you don't damage during a jack knife or tight turn. Most receivers have the band around the outer. I have a piece of the next size larger tubing that I cut the 3/8" band off of and weld it on. You may be ok without it. Good Job !

OK, I understand what you are saying. Thanks for the comment. I always wondered if those bands had a purpose or were just for dress - now I know. Always learn stuff here. The picture is actually the back end of the hitch tube. The trailer side is recessed pretty much into the butt plate so the logs won't catch on it as they swing and rotate around. Here is the working side. Would you suggest I need to change anything ??

The little 1-1/4" hitch on top I bolt on when I want to pull the wood splitter. When I am skidding logs it is not there. Same for any 2" ball.
