Diesel vs gas

i put in my AVERAGE on my truck which is 15 - i get 18plus on hwy - i get 16plus running around locally and 12 pulling loads at the least if i mind my foot - the last F250 gasser i had got 12.5 on hwy, 10 running around and 6 to 7 towing the same things i am towing with my diesel and those weights/mileages.

My diesel does not use def - so calculated that at .0000001 and 10K miles since you have to put in something

so i plugged in 15 for the diesel at 3.00/gal and the gasser at 10 and 2.65/gal which is about where we are right now - my engine was 5K extra at purchase and i currently have 285K on my truck - with those numbers its at 77K to break even, i rounded up to 80K so pretty much around 3.5 times give or take on my situation

Similar results. I used 15 and 10. .30 diff on fuel price. No def.

I just looked at my overhead which hasn't been reset for the past 140K miles. It says 18mpg. So I'm pretty safe at using 15mpg.

In my case regarding my truck, it's a no brainer.

im more than sure it would equate of great value on my large tractors vs compact and mower and only the small skid steers have gassers

Yep, that was my point in regards to diesel engine use increasing.

My buddy is a farmer and burns 400 gallons of fuel a day when they’re running their equipment. Adding in an extra 200-300 gallons it was gas is a substantial difference. When I mow grass for a day it cost me $11 on the grasshopper diesel or about double that for the gas Dixie chopper. That’s a pretty insignificant expense compared to the total income of the day. If I was mowing 6 days a week the diesel mower that cost twice as much upfront might pay off. Mowing 1 day or less a week there’s no chance.

Depending on how many hours you plan to clock of course.

Hi B&D - i have diesel engines from all likes of decades - turbo/non turbo - 1959, 1963, 1996, 1997, 2003 and 2006, 2018 3 cyl to v8, straight mechanical injection pump to HEUI - EFI some of the diesels, intercoolers vs non, maybe you have heard of some of them, IH, Shibaura, Perkins, Navistar, Yanmar - there are tons of differences in engines i will agree but the simple question/answer still applies a diesel will work less and produce similar power to perform the same job and uses less fuel. They have had to create hybrids to get the mileage out of gassers that a diesel can produce pushing the same weight or more down the highway........how many gas tractors do they produce today? Hmmmm i wonder why? and diesel is more expensive than gas per gallon, no say it isn't so!!!! .....why don't they make engines in 18 wheelers gas? thanks for the alarm clock - regards..... RVW

You appear unwilling or unable to tell the difference between light , medium and heavy duty duty cycles as they relate to equipment purchased new in 2018.
You also failed to pickup on the fact that manufactures cater to the largest markets where diesel is cheaper per litre and emissions equipment is lenient.
Americans and Western Europeans have the deep pockets to pay for the add on emissions equipment . Price diesel and gasoline the same per gallon around the world , enforce IV emissions world wide and the light-medium duty diesel market would turn to gasoline .

Small diesel engine use has increased not decreased over the last 30 years.

Diesel fuel is higher than gas. Initial cost of diesel engines are higher than gas. Repair costs are higher than gas.

So why has diesel engine use increased?

The world market where diesel fuel is 2/3 to 3/4 of gasoline . These countries which are the majority of sales . The US are rich suckers and pay for the add on emission equipment.

I'll post this link again to the gas VS diesel break even calculator for RVs. It'll work the same for trucks. Plug in your personal numbers, current fuel prices, DEF costs, etc.... and hit calculate. It'll tell you how many miles you have to drive to break even. It's an eye opener. Plug 'em in and post your results.

Gas vs Diesel A Calculator and My Thoughts

I plugged in my SD diesel. Broke even at 60K miles. Since I'm now at 240K it's wayyyyy ahead. In that time I've never saw 3K rpms. Low engine speed and easy pullin. :)

Really, you are going to try and tell us 60K ? Have you been worshiping a FBI agent that is current testifying?
