When I started work at the Hospital... we had 14 news racks on the street in front... people would come just to pick up the Wall Street Journal, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury, New York Times, etc... all the news racks have been gone for about 10 years...
Towards the end they were getting vandalized or someone would pay for one paper and take the stack...
The graffiti became an issue so the city started citing the paper... and that was that.
Just as much a people problem as anything else...
The old time newsstand also succumbed downtown... it was quite a place.
