Anyone get the newspaper delivered to them?

When I started work at the Hospital... we had 14 news racks on the street in front... people would come just to pick up the Wall Street Journal, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury, New York Times, etc... all the news racks have been gone for about 10 years...

Towards the end they were getting vandalized or someone would pay for one paper and take the stack...

The graffiti became an issue so the city started citing the paper... and that was that.

Just as much a people problem as anything else...

The old time newsstand also succumbed downtown... it was quite a place.

Most newspaper are now delivered by mail in rural areas.

Paper newspapers are quickly becoming obsolete. The main reason we still get one via USPS is for the dogs to crap on. :dog:

A long time ago when I worked at the Tool and Machine company one of our contracts was to make parts for SF Chronicle Printing Presses... it was a lucrative contract and provided the bulk of work for several men overhauling and rejuvenating the equipment.

Lots of interesting jobs back then... Space Shuttle, Kellogg's, Caterpillar, Owens Illinois, Hexcel, Del Monte, etc... the News Paper was one that kept me busy for weeks at a time.

Virtually all of the Bay Area Manufacturing from that time no longer exists... the papers have consolidated and the size of the paper has been greatly reduced.

When you were raised on a cup of coffee and the printed newspaper in the morning. . .hard habit to brake.

When I think of all the school newspaper drives and later for Scouts where we canvassed neighborhoods collecting tons of paper...

The local big town newspaper got so liberal left leaning that I could not continue the subscription.....and I was a customer for 50 years. Now that I have some computer savvy, I get to select my source of information and do not end up with a lot of paper trash to dispose of.

Yet I do miss some of the sections.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to deliver those papers daily and what was the total mileage driven?

The reality is I have no doubt that delivering to a rural area where the houses are spread out is a lot more time consuming that riding on your bike in a housing development.

All that said, this is where it actually makes sense to ensure that you don't run out of papers where they can be picked up in a very rural area, such as gas stations.

Typically on the weekdays 2 hours from when I left the house to return. 2-1/2 hours on the weekend. Some of those guys delivered papers, the local trading Post, and mail courrier from post office to post office.

The carriers pay for those papers. If you have 10 left over that comes out of your pocket. That why paper boxes always run out. I had it down pretty good but I didn't have any boxes.
