I am looking at options to heat and cool, actually mostly cool my 800 sq ft hunting camp that I am building and with some of the prices that I am seeing from AC company's it makes this DIY mini split system look pretty appealing, an 18k btu or ton and a half comes pre-charged with everything you need so you don't have to pull a vacuum and then charge the system therefore you wouldn't need an AC company for that, the unit run's about $1,500.00 and has a 7 year compressor warranty and 5 year part's warranty, so does anyone have any experience with this brand or another DIY mini split system? Thanks, Charlie.

Don't put it in the bedroom. The one I listen to occasionally makes nearly as much noise as a rattling window unit.

Where did the term "wall banger" originate?

I do not have the Mr Cool but I have the Mitsubishi Mr Slim unit for my home office.

I love the unit. Quiet. Does a fantastic job of keeping my attic conversion, home office in Central Texas very comfortable year round. When I installed it, there was no noticeable impact on the electric bill.

If I did not already have center HVAC in the rest of the house, I would install Mini Splits everywhere.

I'll second (or third) Mitsubishi......we have two of them, both very very quiet when on low.....like you can't hardly hear them run. Most recent one we bought has a SEER rating of 23 !

Even though the outdoor unit comes precharged with enough gas for a 30' (I think) line set, you do still have to have a vacuum pulled to remove the air from the line set and the indoor unit. You want to make sure the lines have been properly flared (done on site) and have a good seal in addition to removing the air in them.....only way to do that is pull a vacuum and hold it for a period of time.

I paid a heat/air guy 100 bucks to come out and pull a vac and put his gauges on to check to make sure it held a vac both times I installed my units.

Also be aware most of these units require 220vAC current to run. Make sure you have that or get a unit for 120v. They don't pull a lot of amps, I think they simply use 220v because most of the rest of the world uses that as standard.

I have heard nothing but good about the Mitsubishi units, most feel they are top of the line, I guess the reason I was leaning towards the Mr Cool is because it is 100% DIY from start to finish, no lines to flare, no vacuum to pull, and no AC technician, just real curious about the quality and longevity.

i thought the same, might want to check out the website, the linesets are precharged as well apparently no vacuum needed.

I was also researching the Mr Cool DIY units. Yes they are all self contained, no vacuum needed. If you are a CostCo member, they are selling the 18k BTU units for $900 bucks...can't beat the price anywhere. You have to be a member to even see the price. They are online only, free shipping to home

I have direct experience with 3 Mr Cool units. They are fantastic.

I rarely endorse specific products, but as far as Mr Cool goes, They are fantastic.

I have a 1 ton in my wife's shop, (3 years now) 110v, 15 amp. They are fantastic.

I have a 1 1/2 ton in my garage / workshop (approx 800 sq ft) 3 1/2 years, They are fantastic.

My neighbor has a 3 ton in his shop for 2 1/2 years. They are fantastic.

All are very quiet and smooth running, for the most part you have to put your hand in front of them to make sure they are running. The outside units are all wall mounted and they come with 25' long pre-charged hoses. The only connections are the 2 lines from the air handler inside as well as the control wires (one plug) and power. They are fantastic.

The outside unit and the line sets are pre-charged and have a quick connect valve system so once you make the connection and run the power, just turn it on. NO HVAC TECH NEEDED !!!! NONE !!!! They are fantastic.

Just in case you have not got the message yet """They are fantastic. """

The company I got my units from had a promotion where you record a video and post it on youtube and they would send a bit of a rebate .....

All said and done I had my 1 ton and my 1 1/2 ton delivered and installed for less than $2k.

One of my youtube videos can be seen at Press Play Rewards - Jamie - Ingram's Water and Air - YouTube

And finally, for those skeptics out there, no I do not work for Mr Cool or any of their dealers, I am just a simple old retired sailor trying to pass on a good experience I have had.

Also, they are WiFi enabled, to allow remote control from your smartphone.

They are fantastic.
