There were 3 or 4 feral cats around here about 3 years ago. Don't see even one anymore. Either the highway or the coyotes must have claimed them, or maybe one of the local bald eagles.
One of the major problems controlling them is...the bleeding heart groups that sponsor the capture, sterilization and release of large numbers of feral cats found mostly near urban green spaces and wood lots etc...Yes it stops them from reproducing but it does not stop them from killing native fauna...

They should be humanly captured and humanly euthanized...they do not belong here and they are detrimental to the populations of animals that do...

irresponsible humans are the ultimate cause and you can't fix stupid...and you can't keep them from multiplying...!

Flush the seat out with a bio-ezymatic cleaner. They work pretty well to help break down odors and are safe.

As far as the feral cats go, I have a major problem with them at my place. I have a pack of 5 that regularly visit and they kill squirrels, birds, and rabbits in my yard. They come almost daily around 3am and hunt until sunrise. I can't kill them because we aren't allowed to kill cats in my county. Soon as the weather cools down I'm going to start trapping them. I do not want one of them dying from the heat in the trap and someone accusing me of animal cruelty. I hate those stupid cats. They are loud and I'm tired of picking up dead animals.

My point I was trying to make was there are responsible and irresponsible pet owners. We have a few cats, all spayed/neutered, all the vaccinations, (one is at the veterinarians now...probably a $1k tab).
Mice and rats are highly destructive and a health concern. We don't have feral cats here. We also have black snakes and owls, and just recently made owl nesting boxes that I put up in large oaks around here.
I can't speak for other properties but here I think we have a good balance. Cats do not kill what I would consider beneficial birds, squirrels, etc. Rats, mice, moles yes.
Growing up Grandad next door would shoot anything that moved! He also had mice and rats, shooting all the cats that came along that would have eradicated them.
All the farmers I've ever known were responsible pet owners who had a few barn cats. 20180705_143405.jpeg20180705_160025.jpeg

Thanks for the cleaner recommendation. We'll give it a try.

As for felines:

FWIW: A $1.5 Million Quest to Count Every Cat in D.C. Even Pets

One of the details I read elsewhere was that "catch, neuter, and release" was more effective at control because if you just kill them, other unneutered cats just move in into their place.

(I like cats but they are unchecked prolific breeders and kill tremendous quantities of wildlife. One of their few predators is eagles. )

As with any and all non native invasive species the best solution is complete eradication

Again...it is you that is misinformed...yes cats kill mice and rats...but it is usually human activity (mostly laziness) that is responsible for attracting said mice and rats to near domiciles...your argument is ludicrous...

So no one...and and I no one should have a domestic pet. Become well informed enough to realize the scourge of our planet is domestic pets and they all must be eradicated!

My friend's 5510 got a new operator. A mouse crawled into the lower seat cushion & was happy..... until my friend sat down. The next weekend, we really knew about it.

We hosed it out via the bottom access hole, but there's no way to take the cushion apart and get to it.

I considered filling the seat with backing soda, but someone else suggested roasted coffee. I've read archaeologists use some species of beetle to eat the flesh off of skeletions, but doubt we have any such available.

We're going to see how much stink remains next weekend.
On most seats, there is a piece of weatherstripping that runs around the outside and holds the seat cover on. Does this one not have that?

No, alas... the seams are all sealed at manufacture. There a few vents and the center hole; that's it.

Ever since my neighbor left and took her two cats I have been trapping mouse after mouse. Last week I trapped 18, this week so far 10, they just keep coming. My mom has a big place with many barns and there again the neighbor's cats have wiped them out of there, If cats are spayed and taken care of I don't mind them. I have never seen them destroy the local wildlife population, maybe in the cities, here and there they have issues with them because of stupid lazy people but I don't mind seeing them around my place.. Coyotes, eagles and bears are all over the place around here and they don't seem to bother with the cats, I have seen the same ones for a decade..

My nemesis is the porcupine, they are the most destructive critters I have ever dealt with, I own a log house and they love to eat cedar and pressure treated wood as well, and I love to shoot them when they do.. 20 a year is not uncommon.. My German Shepherd is to smart to go near them, he somehow knows it's a very bad idea to mess with one, normally a dog needs to find out the hard way but not this guy..

Did the mouse enter the seat through an existing opening or did it chew a hole?

If you can cope without use of the seat for a week to ten days...remove the seat and place it over an ant bed...they will leave nothing but bone...

sorry this thread went sideways but certain elements irked some pet (NPI) peeves...
