I'm really getting into this Gary Clark Jr. Blak and Blu is just an awesome album from start to finish (the two bonus tracks are great too.) Style-wise it is all over the place. His range, both vocal and stylistic are just amazing. I can't say enough good things about this album and even like the (slightly) hip hop number in there too. Please Come Home is almost pure R&B with some guitar thrown in.

From what I've seen he also seems like a nice, well grounded person...which is refreshing.

He seems like the real deal, writer, singer, guitarist.

Check out the video for When My Train Pulls In. Great song. Amazing guitar work. The video is powerful too. Heavy message. (Probably rated PG-13 or R so be warned.)

Check out this video too. So tuned into the blues. Real soul. Probably my favorite. Will be buying his second album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim soon:

Excellent. Thanks for the link. Definitely want to see that. Hard to find actual dates on their site but I'll figure it out.

On a slightly different topic, you have mentioned some awesome shows you have been too and I'm very jealous. I haven't been to many truly great shows with big names. And for many of them it is too late. But, I want to put in a plug for a smaller type show which I enjoyed immensely last year. Almost none of the bands have been heard of by many folks but the event it called the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi. It happens every April. Clarksdale is where Robert Johnson is said to have sold his soul to the devil for the ability to play guitar. And while that is probably a myth I consider Johnson to be the father of rock and roll via the blues. Certainly rock has many roots but the blues is the primary thread of its origin. Plus, there are an extraordinary number of huge names in the blues that come from within about 100 miles of Clarksdale.

Anyway. Clarksdale is a dirty, depressed, dying little town. I lived there when I was a kid. Morgan Freeman's blues club, Ground Zero is there and so is the Delta Blues Museum. (I am friends with one of Morgan Freeman's sons, coincidentally....just thought I'd thrown that in...;-) ). But when the Juke Joint Festival comes around Clarksdale really wakes up. You pay like $20 and you have access to venues all over town with local blues bands playing. Dozens of acts. In old banks, old theaters. Many of these folks are relatives of famous local bluesmen. You go wherever you want to. Lots of great southern local food like tamales and crawfish. Acts playing all day and into the night the whole weekend. Some of them in joints you would not go into when the festival was not on. Great authentic blues.

What will blow your mind is the number of Europeans there. They still really appreciate the blues. And when you look at most of these Mississippi blues bands tour schedules they are mostly in England, Germany, Holland, Denmark etc.

When I wax nostalgic I get out my stack of old ticket stubs...I don't have them all but quite a few...I was lucky to have lived near several popular venues that were attractive to a lot of tours...was also within an 8 hour drive of many others in places like Miami and Atlanta...Used to see Mudcrutch in much smaller venues (bars near USF)...The same clubs/bars where the 'Outlaws' played on a regular basis before they hit the (short lived) bigtime...I went to high school with Frank O'Keefe...his parents owned a local restaurant in Clearwater (FL)...

For anyone not familiar with the 'Outlaws' here are a couple of their hits:

I've always said "I like hanging out on TBN for learning new things...." often meant re. Tractors et al, but this thread is a great retrospective, and turns up new things to check out :)

Grew up on Rock, wandered through Classical and Blues, and more recently Jazz. Had an uncle who was a pretty fair amateur fiddler, so liked my share of old time Country from back then.

I'll paraphrase Wille Nelson (see Teatro (Video, Wim Wenders), if you can get your hands on it) "It's all just music, at least before all the marketing schmucks got involved...."

Brit influence was extra heavy at certain times in Canada. Wasn't into the lifestyle, but liked a lot of the early punk, and later Clash.

Didn't know the band at the time, but love youtube for going back in time to find gems I missed, like RockGoddess. Just found them a couple of Winters back.

Again, missed them back then, but given that I liked the energy of punk loved seeing MC5 years laters, circa '70......

MC5 at Tartar Field, Wayne State University, Detroit on July 19th - YouTube

For MC, jump to about 3:00 if you want to Kick Out The Jams !
