Buying a new subcompact tractor

First time tractor buyer. I am in Canada and am in the market for a subcompact tractor with a front end loader and mid mount mower. I plan to buy a Kubota BX2380. There are 2 dealers within an hours drive of my house. Any thoughts on how much wiggle room there is on a purchase like this? I understand that the dealer needs to make a fair profit but I do not want to look like an idiot by paying too much.

On an all in cash price including any incentives one dealer has quoted me approximately $1,800 less than the other one for the same tractor and same implements. Would I be correct in assuming that this is pretty much a bottom line price? I cannot seem to find any Canadian list prices.

Between the dealers, which seems more stable and had a good service department?

I think the 2nd link is used trade-in 5 hours at a Deere dealer. Kubota has list price for tractor on their CA website but they lock up the loader and mower, etc prices.

Thanks for the info and links guys. Before sales tax I am looking at Cdn$19,600 vs Cdn$21,400. Identical set up and tractors from existing inventory.

I have driven the tractor and find myself quite comfortable on it. They want approximate an additional Cdn$1,400 for the BX2680. Seems the only difference is 2.5 hp so probably not worth it. I also looked at the Deere 1025R. I really did not like the Deere salesman. Very much a take it or leave it price and no offer to show me the features or test drive. Other Deere dealers are further away.

Nothing really to choose from between the two Kubota shops. Both salesmen were pleasant to deal with. The one with the higher offer price has a more fancy showroom and service area. More overhead I presume.

Any thoughts on filling the rear tires with fluid? One of the dealers recommends it for ballast.

Add the ballast to the rear tires. Although you don't say much about what you'll be doing with it, for most chores these small tractors are light to begin with and have much of their weight on the front end compared with an old farm tractor. If you plan to have a front end loader (a very handy and highly recommended addition), even more weight in back is important. Usually owners put something on the 3 point hitch, either an implement or an actual ballast weight, for balance.

Once settled on a model, implements and accessories, I always suggest buyers contact the closest 3 dealers to them (even if 100's of miles) and get a printed quote emailed to you.

Prices vary by region, and this is the only way to know what is the going price point in your region.

In my area, 10 percent off MSRP is normal when using Kubota financing. MSRP was listed for each item on my quotes. Also the MSRP for the tractor and loader could be found using the "build my Kubota " feature on the website.
Of course the Canadian site may be different.

If paying cash, then further discount could be had.

If you cant get MSRP on the Canadian site, try the US site then multiply the price by 1.25 that should give you an idea of your MSRP. Of course that wont account for any Canadian specific fees.

Personally I have lawn mowers and I have tractors. Unless your tractor will primarily be used for mowing, I'd opt out on the mmm and buy a riding mower. Couple of reasons: MMMs are in the way and since they are mounted where they are they are a !@#$% to clean out compacted wet grass that is a problem every spring......when the grass is growing and needs mowing. You can get a nice big box mower and put $500 in your pocket.

I like the Husqvarna 20 hp 46" cut conventional rider, may be 2246 now since they seem to be putting 22 hp engines on them rather than the 20 like was on mine. I like the deck for 2 reasons: It's high (clippings removal area) allowing room for clippings to sweep out, stamped meaning there aren't any sharp corners to catch grass (like on my DR Pro Z 52, and Ferris IS700Z 61") and formed to assist the movement of clippings. Having only 2 blades eliminates the center blade which gets in the way of clippings from the left side getting swept out. Rarely do I have to clean mine and I use it for my spring mowing.

Yeah they aren't built like a tank but they run a good 600 or so hours before spindles and idlers get tired and the www readily available parts that wear out you can buy with a $20 bill.....the belt is more than that but it's not worn out in 600 hrs.

Thanks, I do presently have a riding mower, a 5 year old Deere D140. I am cutting approximately 4 acres of grass. Would like to do it a bit faster. I did think of going to a zero turn but I landed on a subcompact tractor because I also have a bit of landscaping work I want to do (mainly moving soil and gravel around) and I also want to move some stuff around with pallet forks.

A tractor with a 60" MM would be ideal for your acreage, a riding mower will take all day. I use my FEL to raise up the tractor to clean under the deck and it works great. Only time I take my MM off is during the winter months. You'll love the Kubota, for its size it is a work horse. Good luck!
